As Low As
City hears calls for more open space
By Barbara Taormina
M
alden has one of the
smal lest amounts of
open space among commu-
nities throughout the state
and a limited number of op-
portunities to create more
public green areas. The status
of the city’s open space was
one of the key takeaways of
a growthmanagement study
presented to the City Coun-
cil this week. The study, pre-
pared by Community Oppor-
tunities Group, is loadedwith
informationon the impacts of
residential development. For
residents interested in wad-
ing through the numbers,
the Malden News Network
has published the following
link to the complete study,
https://goo.gl/d0BkBH.
Roberta Cameron, a plan-
ner and consultant for Com-
munityOpportunities Group,
summarized the study’s key
findings for councillors, in-
cluding the informat ion
about the city’s open space.
“There is no complete andau-
thoritative inventory of your
open space,” Cameron told
councillors. Different reports
have disparities that need to
be resolved, she added.
Still, Cameron and the staff
at CommunityOpportunities
Groupestimated thatMalden
has about 415 acres of open
space, half of whichmakes up
the city’s cemeteries. Roughly
183 acres, or 44percent of the
Malden’s open space, is city-
or state-owned parkland.
According to the study,
Malden ranks fifth from the
bottom among Massachu-
setts communities in the
amount of open space per
capita. The study does ac-
knowledge that the city’s
limited green space is com-
parable toopen space inven-
tories in surrounding com-
munities with similar histo-
ries of growth and develop-
ment.
Roughly 100 residents par-
ticipated in public work-
shops held to gauge com-
munity sentiment ongrowth
and development for the
study. The need for more
open space was frequent-
ly cited as a priority among
participants. But many more
residents have long called
for more public green spac-
es, and Cameron said there
are some limited opportuni-
ties. Roughly 77 acres of pri-
vately owned residential and
commercial landare current-
ly vacant.
“There may be some op-
portunities to expand and
improve open space there,”
said Cameron.
However, the study sug-
gests that the main oppor-
tunities to add to the city’s
stock of public green space
are with the 18 acres at the
former Malden Hospital site,
the National Grid proper-
ty earmarked for a minor-
league baseball park, the
Malden River waterfront and
the Northern Strand Com-
munity Trail (Bike to the Sea
trail), which couldbe expand-
ed and improved.
Ward 7 Councillor Neal An-
derson said the study’s infor-
mation on development and
open spacevalidatesmuchof
what officials have been see-
ing and hearing for the past
