Lady Pats softball team’s unbeaten streak snapped by Saugus
By Julian Cardillo
T
he Revere High School soft-
ball team got a wakeup call
onWednesday morning. Play-
ing against conference rivals
Saugus, the Patriots stumbled
through the opening innings
and fell, 5-2, for their first loss
of the season. Revere, now
4-1, just wasn’t ready for the
game.
“I think maybe we were a
little too big for our britches,”
saidRevere coach JoeCiccarel-
lo. “We were half-asleep when
we showed up and you could
tell duringwarm-ups. That car-
ried into the first few innings,
and it made a big difference.”
Saugus scored four runs
in the first inning and add-
ed their fifth and final in the
second. Pitcher Olivia McMa-
nus struggled in the early go-
ings, though she and the play-
ers around her woke up as the
game unfolded.
“It’s a lack of experience, def-
initely, you could talk about
that,”saidCiccarello.“That start
didn’t help. But you cannot
take innings off. And that’s ex-
actly what we did.”
Revere left a number of run-
ners on base, but managed to
get on the scoreboard in the
fifth inning. Down 5-0, Vic-
toria Coreia reached second
base, then was driven in by an
RBI single from Alina Giuliano.
Giuliano scored moments lat-
er off an RBI double by Jordan
Sullivan.
Revere will play Everett on
Friday – assuming there is no
rain delay; the game will oth-
erwise be rescheduled for Sat-
urday.“They’re an experienced
teamandplay a lot like us,”said
Ciccarello of the CrimsonTide.
“They’re very well rounded
and have given us challenges
in the past.”
