Pats baseball team humbled at home
By Julian Cardillo
T
heRevereHighSchool base-
ball team is in themiddle of
a rebuild and is taking some
knocks, but new coach Ron
Jordan is optimistic his players
are learning fromthe setbacks.
On Wednesday, the Patriots
lost to conference rivals Sau-
gus, 6-0, despite a promising
performance on the mound
by Joey Gendreau.
“We got good pitching, but
right now we’re a very young
team,” Jordan said. “We’re tak-
ing lumps and getting some
experience … Four freshmen
and two sophomores are play-
ing a varsity schedule. You try
to take the good with the bad
and find positives.”
Fundamentally, Revere is
making mistakes. The team
had four fielding errors against
Saugus and had some at bats
end on called third strikes.
“I would have expect a team
that wonone game last year to
get kids back, but that’s not the
case,”Jordan said. “We’re start-
ing out fresh.”
Wednesday’s game lasted
an hour and a half. Revere ac-
crued just two hits. They have
an ERA of 2.80.
Gendreau played four and a
third innings. He allowed two
hits and walked three; two
walks came in the fourth. “He’s
pitching on five days’ rest and
I prefer seven days’ rest,” said
Jordan. “But with the weath-
er, the games have been all
packed together. The season
is bunched up early.”
Down 2-0 in the fourth in-
ning, Saugus’s offense explod-
ed and opened the game with
a two-out single that led to
four more runs. That said, Jor-
dan is pleased with what he
saw from Gendreau.
“He just got tired, hewas do-
ingwell keeping the ball down
and throwing his breaking ball
for strikes,” Jordan said. “He’s a
junior – not a very big kid – so
in the off-season he can get
stronger and maybe has the
potential to be a kid we throw
out once a week…He’s a lefty
pitcher, which is effective at
this level.”
Revere’s next game is sched-
uled for Friday against Everett,
though they’ll play Saturday in
the event of a rainout.
“Everett, they’ve got tough
kids,” Jordan said. “It won’t be
an easy one. We have Vincent
DiGregorio pitching. But we
have to start swinging bats
better.”
