Council expected to set casino vote for Nov. 5
By Sara Brown -
There will not be a primary election in September in Revere. There was one scheduled on Sept. 17 in Ward 5 amongst incumbent John Powers and opponents Albert Terminello and William Bell. However, Bell unexpectedly dropped out of the race causing no need for a preliminary.
Terminello said he was looking forward to a primary. “It developed interest around the ward,” he said. “Sometimes people don’t care about elections until right before the November vote. Competition brings awareness up.”
He also said that Ward 5 residents were looking forward to a September election as well. “I was getting calls asking me what my stand was on particular issues,” Terminello said. “There was an interest among the voters.”
Incumbent Powers, in a phone interview with The Revere Advocate last week, stated that he feels confident about his re-election, saying that he will stand by his record, having served a total of six terms since first being elected to office in 2001.
“I’m proud of my record representing the citizens of Ward 5—from addressing the flooding issues with new pumping stations, supporting the five new schools to the casino project—I think I’ve done a great job for the taxpayers,” said Powers. But Terminiello questions the incumbent’s record.
“In all the years Powers been a ward councillor—not once has he hosted a Ward 5 neighborhood meeting to address the residents’ concerns,” said Terminello. “He also failed to bring up any fresh ideas of his own throughout his tenure in the city council that would benefit the Ward 5 residents.”
Well, the voters will have plenty of time to decide given that a primary has been nixed and the candidates’ campaigns are in full swing.
With no primary election, that means all candidates will go straight to the general election on Tuesday, November 5.
Incumbent Councillors-at-Large Brian Arrigo, John Correggio, Jessica Giannino, Robert Haas, and anthony zambuto are all vying for their respective seats on the council again. They will be facing challengers Walter Kovil, Steven Morabito, and George Rotondo.
Fellow Beachmont resident Gregg LaCedra will be facing incumbent Ward 1 Councillor Richard Penta to represent the ward.
Ward Councillors Arthur Guinasso, Stephen Reardon, Charles Patch, and Ira Novoselsky are running unopposed.
Incumbent School Committee Members Michael Ferrante, Dan Maguire, Donna Wood-Pruitt, Stacey Rizzo, Frederick Sannella, and Carol Tye are facing off with residents Ricky Freni, Susan Gravallese, Juan Jaramillo, and Patrick Keefe.
In other election news, the City Council will meet on Mon., Sept. 16 to set the citywide casino referendum vote which is expected to take place on November 5.
