While growing up, most of us discovered that it was easier not to challenge certain rules of etiquette or beliefs that might set us apart from what was considered normal behavior. Most of us learned what was expected of us in school, work, as well as our places of worship. As children, and later as adults, it did not take long to notice those that did not think, say, or do things that were more of a customary nature as we knew it. We thought that perhaps some of these people were a little eccentric or at the very least were just seeking attention. However, history has taught us that in some cases that going against the grain of conventional thinking can bring about a positive impact rebuking long held traditions and values. Those of you that are baby boomers may remember Doctor Benjamin Spock who was instrumental in instituting innovations in child development. Helen Keller inspired the changes in the laws that enabled people with disabilities access to education and employment. There are dozens of examples of rather ordinary people that went on to achieve greatness and earn enormous respect only through their tireless advocacy efforts and fearless activism.
