Guinasso and Keefe elected 2019 City Council leaders
By Tara Vocino In a unanimous vote, 2019 City Council President Arthur Guinasso Sr. and 2019 Council Vice President Patrick Keefe, Jr. were elected on Monday night at City Hall with 2018 Council President Jessica Giannino and 2018 Council Vice President Joanne McKenna exiting their year-long positions. The longest-serving City Councillor, Arthur Guinasso, of 32 years, was elected Council President. He served as Council President during 1993 and 2016. City seeking new member for Historical Commission
Mayor Gary Christenson is reaching out to Malden residents in an effort to fill a vacancy on the Malden Historical Commission due to a recent retirement. The Historical Commission is a five-member Board appointed by the Mayor. The Commission was established in 1973 as a local historical commission pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 40, Section 8D to assist with the preservation, protection and development of the historical or archeological assets of Malden. Applicants should have a keen interest in architecture and historical preservation. Members are appointed to three-year terms and the Commission meets as needed. City of Malden receives $300,200 in state Municipal Public Safety Staffing Grant
Malden was announced as one of the awardees of the Massachusetts Municipal Public Safety Staffing Grant through the state Office of Public Safety and Security. Malden is one of 10 municipalities across the Commonwealth to receive assistance through this grant, which helps cities and towns throughout the state to address and meet the staffing needs of their police and/or fire departments. Massachusetts House of Representatives members Steve Ultrino, Paul Donato and Paul Brodeur were integral in procuring the funding through this grant program. As of Dec. 31, 2018, Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to prohibit health care institutions, including pharmacies, from selling tobacco and vaping products.
