New-look basketball Pioneers begin season Friday night at Pentucket

    December 14, 2018

By Joe Mitchell   The Lynnfield High School boys’ basketball team will begin a brand new campaign Friday night, Dec. 14, against host Pentucket. But this season might be more of a work in progress for veteran coach Scott MacKenzie’s team with a whole new starting five after last year’s group has long since graduated. Perhaps the biggest of the team’s losses is point guard specialist and Cape Ann League Kinney Division Player of the Year Billy Arsenault. Besides being the architect of the team’s offensive game plan, Arsenault was also its sparkplug throughout the last four years. He’s now naturally playing on the next level at Assumption College. The…

By Joe Mitchell   The Lynnfield High School wrestling team opened up a brand new season last Saturday, Dec. 8, and came away with one win in a tri-match at Wilmington. They lost to Whittier (48-36) and Hopkinton by the same score, before beating the host team, 41-27. Stuart Glover (126-pounds, 4:33 win by pin), Tim Leggett (138, 3:54, win by pin), Dylan Reardon (152, 0:53, win by pin), Dan Ryan (160, 1:35, win by pin), Sean McCullough (182, win by forfeit) and Greg Camier  (220, 1:29, win by pin) were the Lynnfield winners against Whittier. “It was an action-packed dual meet from start to finish, with the lead going…

Lynnfield football coach Pat Lamusta honors individuals for outstanding contributions on the gridiron at annual team banquet

    December 6, 2018

By Joe Mitchell   Lynnfield High School football coach Pat Lamusta held his first end-of-the-season team banquet Monday night, Dec. 3, and throughout the usual festive event he gave out awards to this year’s worthy recipients, while providing a comment on the reasoning behind the process. Bakari Mitchell took home the Scout Team Player of the Year Award. “Bakari is a sophomore, who really chipped in at practice. He is talented, and has a bright future with our team,” said Lamusta. Salvatore Marotta was the team’s unsung hero as he was a senior who was willing to play any position to help the team win. He’s a very coachable player,…

Hockey Pioneers prepare for long postseason run with a veteran lineup of 18 returnees

    December 6, 2018

By Joe Mitchell   The Lynnfield High School boys’ hockey team enjoyed its best season ever under the direction of coach Jon Gardner and his staff, when they compiled a 12-5-3 record, before losing a heartbreaker to Wilmington in a Division 2 North first-round game, 4-3. The Wildcats scored the game-winner with three seconds left on the clock to pullout the triumph. But that devastating loss to the 13th seed that was playing in the Division 1 bracket, before being dropped down to the next grade level won’t affect the Pioneers, who are on a continued mission to  go deep into the postseason. They were the third seed, but had…
