High school students participate in anti-violence walkout

By Christopher Roberson One month after shots rang out at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., more than 300 students at Lynnfield High School took part in a walkout to show their support for those who were lost that day and to send a message to federal lawmakers. The event was part of #NationalSchoolWalkout, which called on schools across the country to “protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.” Senior Nicholas Bisconti shared his thoughts during the March 15 walkout, which lasted 17 minutes – one minute for each life that was taken…

Malden swimmer Jinapin’s college search spans coast to coast

By Tony Capobianco   Malden senior Pete Jinapin capped off his high school swimming career with a silver medal in the 100 meter breaststroke race in the state championships. A moment he considers to be his crowning achievement.  “It was a fast and successful meet for me and I won a silver medal in one of my events,” Jinapin said. “Surprising because I went faster in both my junior and sophomore years in the same event and placed 6th. I think I just got lucky this year and got 2nd.” Now he is in the midst of a college recruiting process that literally spans coast to coast.  “I have talked…

“Mother Nature must not be a baseball fan”

World Series Park superintendent says March snow will probably delay usage of the ballfield for weeks By Mark E. Vogler The Saugus High School Varsity baseball team initially had a couple of scrimmage games scheduled at World Series Park for next week. But the team will have to find another place to play or cancel its practice games on account of the accumulation of snow that’s been piling up this month from nor’easters which have hit the region. “The field was drying out nicely on March 1, but then we got bombarded with lots of rain and snow,” World Series Park Superintendent Bob Davis told The Saugus Advocate this week.…

    Interpreting a book on race

A Garden Club member creates symbolic floral arrangement at “Books in Bloom” library event By Mark E. Vogler A Massachusetts schoolteacher’s book about finding herself in the story of race motivated Joyce C. Rodenhiser to create a floral arrangement that featured a white snapdragon contrasted against a mosaic of color. “I tried to find dried flowers that go with the different colors of skin,” Rodenhiser said of her entry that was on display last Friday at the Saugus Public Library during the Fourth Annual “Books in Bloom” event. “A mosaic of color – it truly is,” she said.
