      The Melrose Arts and Crafts Society just completed a project called “Little Hats, Big Hearts.” Joanne Runne, a co-president, made this her project for the year.  Many members knitted 139 red hats for newborns, including preemies, to participate with the American Heart Association and the Children’s Heart Fund to donate red hats for upcoming Heart Month.  Hospitals participating are Boston Children’s Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester and UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.     Autumn Leaves Bazaar in Melrose – Sat., Nov. 10

    This year’s annual Autumn Leaves Bazaar has been scheduled for Saturday, November 10. As in the past, it will be held in the Fuller House Common Room from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The address is 101 Cottage St. in Melrose. Featured tables will include jewelry, white elephant, Christmas items, crafts and knit items, and baked goods. Coffee and a light lunch will be available for purchase. One of last year’s favorite tables was a large raffle table featuring gift cards and various themed baskets donated by members and also local merchants.     O’Donnell 5K draws large crowd despite rain

     By Christopher Roberson MELROSE – Nearly 200 runners braved torrential downpours to participate in the Fourth Annual Mary O’Donnell 5K to continue raising money in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Melrose resident Matthew O’Donnell said he and his family started the race after his mother, Mary O’Donnell, was taken by the disease in November 2014 at the age of 51. She was married to William O’Donnell for 24 years and was the mother of five children. “It’s a great tribute to my mom,” O’Donnell said of the race, adding that the event generates “$30,000 to $40,000” each year, and “The continued support of the people in the community…

    The15th annual Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival will be held this coming weekend. Visitors to the event should take note of the following information. Revere Beach Boulevard will be closed from Elliot Circle to Chester Avenue from Friday, July 20 at 7 a.m. until Sunday, July 22, at 11 p.m. (Please note road closures may change at the discretion of the incident commander if necessary). After the fireworks on Saturday night, Ocean Avenue will be closed for approximately one hour to allow pedestrians to exit safely.
