Tanners girls’ basketball team eyes return to playoffs

By Greg Phipps Peabody High School girls’ basketball head coach Stan McKeen said last winter was the only season in his previous four years at the helm that his squad had not qualified for the postseason tournament. The 2018-19 Tanners are looking to rectify that and make a return to the playoffs. “That’s our first priority. Then, obviously, we hope we can get a first-round game at home and, hopefully, go from there,” said McKeen, whose unit finished 8-12 last year. “This is my fifth year and last year was the first time we didn’t make the playoffs. The girls who are coming back [from last season’s team], especially the…

Peabody girls’ hockey team vanishes Magicians in opener

By Greg Phipps Having made consistent strides forward over the past two seasons, the Peabody girls’ hockey team began this winter in strong fashion by downing the Marblehead Magicians, 6-2, on Saturday at Salem State University’s Rockett Arena. Having earned postseason bids the last two years, the Tanners and head coach Michelle Roach are hoping they can take another step up the ladder in 2018-19. Peabody has suffered losses in its opening round postseason contests the last two years and would like to advance and make some noise in the tournament this time around. Saturday’s season-opening win helped get the team kick-started in the right direction. “It was good to…

Tanner boys Soccer recognized at annual banquet

By Greg Phipps Prior to his presentation of varsity awards, Peabody boys’ soccer head coach Stan McKeen talked about this year’s program producing a combined 27-11-12 record between the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity squads. “Not a bad number. It shows we’re competitive from top to bottom and the future looks promising,” McKeen told the gathering of players, parents and coaches on Tuesday night, Nov. 20, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Peabody. The 2018 varsity and JV teams each finished with 11 victories, and the freshmen recovered from a 0-2-3 start to collect five wins. On the subject of the varsity team, McKeen said beating Northeastern Conference (NEC)…

Peabody shuts down Sachems in annual Turkey Day clash

By Greg Phipps In what was being billed as the most competitive match-up between Peabody and Saugus in several years, last Thursday’s annual Thanksgiving Day battle turned out to be a lot more one-sided than anticipated. Leading 10-0 at halftime, Peabody would add 28 more points on its way to an eventual 38-6 rout in the unseasonably frigid cold at Veterans Memorial Stadium, where the windchill factor had temperatures hovering in the single digits. Saugus managed to tally on its last possession to avoid the shutout. Prior to that, the Sachems had been held to just 40 total yards – never making it into Peabody territory – and were shut…

Loss to Woburn leaves Tanners short of winning season

By Greg Phipps   The Peabody Tanners were shooting for a second consecutive winning campaign. But a tough 28-24 loss to Woburn last Friday night in the rain at Veterans Memorial Stadium assured that an above-.500 result would not be the case this fall. Trailing 21-14 in the third quarter, Colby Therrien scored on a one-yard run followed by a successful PAT kick that tied the game. The Tanners then went ahead when kicker Austin Leggett drilled a 37-yard field goal early in the fourth to put Peabody ahead, 24-21. Woburn responded by producing a lengthy, time-consuming drive that culminated in a short TD run, a subsequent point-after kick and…

Young Peabody girls’ soccer team advances to second round

By Greg Phipps Fielding an extremely youthful squad, the Peabody girls’ soccer team opened the Div. I North playoffs at home and rewarded themselves with a 2-0 victory over 11th-seeded Central Catholic last Saturday. The jubilation would be short-lived, however, as the No. 6 seed Tanners were shut out at third-seeded Westford Academy, 3-0, in Monday’s second-round contest. Peabody finished 10-7-1 for the season. Head coach Dennis Desroches has to feel good about his team’s prospects. Three-quarters of this year’s roster was made up of freshmen and sophomore players, many of them starters and regulars. “This was a great experience for our squad. With most [of the team] returning, we…
