The City of Malden in collaboration with Malden veteran organizations, including the Jewish War Veterans and Irish American Club, is launching a citywide fundraising effort to support the renovation of the World War I (WWI) Monument at Devir Park. The Monument was dedicated on July 4, 1920, and specifically honored Malden’s “Edgeworth” WWI veterans. The City of Malden recently became aware that nearly three-quarters of Malden’s WWI veterans are not memorialized anywhere in the community – the existing Monument lists roughly 500 names of the 2,000 or so who served. As a result, this 100-year-old Monument will undergo a transformation with the addition of two bronze plaques bearing the names of the other 1,500 veterans from Malden who served during this war. Additionally, the City of Malden learned that the 45 Malden women who served in France with the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI are not memorialized, and their names will also be included.
If you are a veteran, veteran’s family member, have a relative or neighbor who served during WWI or would just like to support this effort, the City of Malden welcomes your assistance in creating this lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of these heroes. Citizens, veterans and businesses are encouraged to adopt a WWI veteran by donating $25 in the memory of a specific man or woman who served our country 100 years ago. All donations received will go toward the estimated $50,000 needed for the renovations. Residents are invited to view Malden’s list of WWI veterans on the City of Malden website by visiting www.cityofmalden.org/WWIMonument.
The City of Malden is working to ensure that the project will be completed by November 11, 2018, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day, the official end of WWI. We hope you will assist in properly honoring the men and women who bravely served this country 100 years ago.
Checks should be made payable to the “CITY OF MALDEN” with “WWI MONUMENTS” noted in the memo section and mailed to Kevin Jarvis, Director of Veterans Services, 110 Pleasant St., 3rd Floor, Malden, MA 02148. To adopt a specific veteran, please call 781-397-7139 and provide the name of the veteran, or the City of Malden will provide you with the name of a veteran. Also let us know if we are missing any WWI veterans! Anyone planning to donate must do so by May 1, 2018.
