East Meets West @ Linden Tree Coffeehouse on Nov. 3

Encore performances from Maine’s Jud Caswell and California’s Claudia Russell with Bruce Kaplan

The Linden Tree Coffeehouse will continue its 34th season of Smile Making Music on Saturday, November 3 at 8 p.m. Two wonderful singer-songwriters will return to Wakefield for encore performances. From the state of Maine is Jud Caswell and from California, Claudia Russell with Bruce Kaplan.

Chicago DJ Rich Warren, a reviewer for Sing Out! magazine, described Caswell as highly original and wise beyond his years. Maine’s Jud Caswell is a little bit like a one-man folk festival. You’ve got your banjo picking, your Irish drinking songs, a rack of acoustic instruments, and a deep catalog of award-winning originals. He’s often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox, but his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock. His sixth CD reflects his years full of music, a celebration of life, love, family, friends, and all that is wonderful about mid-coast Maine. His song “Blackberry Time” got him a lot of folk radio airplay and several singer-songwriting awards from Florida, Oregon, Texas and locally in Massachusetts. Jud’s songs take you into his stories with clear images and characters while he accompanies himself on his beautiful six-string guitar – www.JudCaswell.com.

The duo Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan is also a favorite of Rich Warren of Sing Out! He noted, “Claudia can really sing! Not only does she have an impressive set of pipes, she interprets songs rather than merely convey the lyrics. She is a superior voice in the crowded field of singer-songwriters.”

Playing gigs from her home state of California to the East Coast in venues large and small, award-winning songwriter Claudia Russell brings her fifth CD, “Lovers Tree,” a mix of songs that seem traditional and contemporary, many that pleased audiences this past summer at the New Bedford Folk Festival. Accompanying Claudia is her husband, Bruce Kaplan, a renaissance man in his own right. As a musician, Kaplan has worked with many singer-songwriters, most notably Claudia Russell. He is known for deftly accompanying on mandolin and electric guitar, providing melodic counterpoint and atmosphere that aspires to elevate each song a little higher. On stage he is noted for witty, off-the cuff remarks – www.ClaudiaRussell.com.

Jud Caswell and Claudia Russell have samples of their music on their websites, for a preview of the Linden Tree Coffeehouse concert, and on their websites you can learn more about them.
