The Revere High School Football Patriots started their season in the worst way possible, with losses on the scoreboard. But sometimes being the underdog with nothing to lose has its advantages, especially when you bring in some young talent with a “never-say-die” attitude. The Football Pats proved they belong in the tourney last Friday night when they walked tall into North Reading for the Division 4 quarterfinal against the Hornets and walked out the victors in a 27-20 win to earn a second-round run against number 2 seed Gloucester on Friday.

Although the Pats started the game in a dominating fashion with a 13-0 lead when quarterback Jonathan Murphy ran for 15 yards for a touchdown followed by a Darius McNeil run and a PAT by Rayan Riazi, North Reading bounced back in the second quarter with a TD to end the half, 13-7 Pats. But Revere’s resilience paid off when Murphy hit Eric Bua for a touchdown. Riazi kicked the extra point, giving the Pats a 20-7 lead in the third quarter. But the Hornets fought back, capitalizing on Revere’s mistakes for a TD to cut the lead to 20-13 to end the third quarter.

Again, Revere’s defense came through as co-Capt. Frank Sims intercepted a Hornet pass at the North Reading 30-yard line, giving the Pats great field position, as McNeil grabbed his second touchdown of the night and a 27-13 lead for the visitors. The Hornets would grab another six points, and with less than 30 seconds in regulation, North Reading attempted an onside kick only to have it recovered by the Pats’ star of the game, Sims, who cemented the win for Revere.

The Pats will travel to Gloucester to face the Fishermen (7-1) tonight at 7 p.m. Revere lost to Gloucester in their season opener, but given how close a game the two teams battled so early in the season, Revere has a great shot to win – the Pats are a different team from when they started.

Go Pats!
