Letter to the Editor: Masonic Lodge publicly honors Saugus Fire Department for heroic action after fire
On Feb 15, 2018 the members of William Sutton Masonic Lodge invited the crew of the Saugus Fire Dept., which helped save our Lodge room from fire destruction, to join the Masons for dinner. On Dec 8, 2017, a fire broke out behind the church (First Congregational Church) which houses our Masonic Lodge room. Due to the rapid response and tremendous effort of the dept., the building was saved from destruction with only minor heat damage to the exterior of the building. This meant that the portion of the church structure built in 1852 and all of the 150 year old irreplaceable valuables inside were saved. These include records, the original Bible, Square and Compasses, and other regalia of the Lodge.
We wanted to be able to publicly thank the department and show our gratitude by presenting them with a plaque of appreciation.
The District Deputy Grand Master of the 4th Masonic district was also present that evening for a fraternal visit and was able to convey his thanks on behalf of the Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts.
