For the second year in a row, the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative has chosen the “250 Beds for 250 Kids” campaign of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless for its Advent charitable initiative.
Throughout Advent, both St. Maria Goretti (SMG) and Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) parishes have provided an opportunity at family Masses for special children’s offertory collections – called “Coins for Kids” – to encourage an early understanding of stewardship in its youngest parishioners. All of the funds raised through these special collections, as well as any donations received at SMG’s Breakfast with Santa event, are earmarked for this cause.
The OLA School has also made initiatives to raise contributions. OLA’s student council instituted a No Uniform Today (fondly referred to as NUT) incentive that offered students the opportunity not to wear their school uniforms for a day in exchange for a small donation. Between the funds raised by the student council and individual donations from parents, the school raised enough money for 10 beds!
The 250 Beds for 250 Kids campaign’s goal is to raise funds to provide beds for needy kids. For every $250 raised, a child will receive a complete new bed set, which will be delivered to the child’s home. The Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative believes that in this season of Advent – which anticipates the birth of the baby Jesus who was born in a manger with no bed to call His own – this is a particularly appropriate cause. Last year the parishioners of Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative presented the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless with a check for nearly $6,000!
