Lynnfield Cub Scouts code robots at Apple Store

By Pack 48 Den Leader Patrick G. Curley

Lynnfield Pack 48 2nd grade Wolf Cub Scouts loved their Apple store field trip (left to right): Chris “CJ” Anderson, Camden Anderson, Hannah Curley (sibling of Alan), Noah Desrochers, Quinn Panos, Ray Fitzgerald (sibling of Kai), Alan Curley, Kai Fitzgerald, Tyler Desrochers, Den Leader Patrick Curley, Tyler Ing, Benjamin Glasser, Will Biggar, Jackson Lewis, Michael Cieslewicz and Apple MarketStreet Creative Pros Kerry Bramhall and Rick Malmquist.

Lynnfield Cub Scouts in the Wolf Den recently learned how to code “Sphero” robots at Apple MarketStreet in Lynnfield. Hosted by Apple Store Creative Pro Kerry Bramhall, every single member of the Wolf Den attended this unique adventure. Each Scout was awarded a Certificate of Coding Accomplishment and an Apple T-shirt.

The Scouts paired up into six teams and learned how to code their robots to move around a series of very challenging mazes that the Apple store had created. Various factors – including speed, distance, direction, lights and even sound – could be coded to the exact specifications of the Scouts. The robots move and look a bit like BB-8 from the recent Star Wars movies.

“This event was a definite winner for the Scouts,” said Den Leader Patrick Curley. “Our Scouts made amazingly-quick progress in learning how to use iPads to code and control the robots to race around the mazes. We are grateful to the Apple store and to Kerry Bramhall for hosting this memorable event.”

Cub Scouting is open to new members year-round. If your son would like to sign up, please contact Pack 48 Cubmaster Jim Squadrito at 978.501.1776.
