Democrats came out in large numbers to attend last Thursday’s Annual Malden Democratic City Committee (MDCC) Barbeque at Anthony’s of Malden. With Mayor Gary Christenson, Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe and former Fire Chief Jack Colangeli working their magic on the grill in the 90 degree heat, with help from MDCC Ward 6 Chair Jean Voltaire and State Representative Steve Ultrino, hamburgers, hotdogs and all the fixings were served throughout the event. Despite the heat, a great time was had by all!
Elected officials as well as candidates for office addressed the crowd of nearly 220. Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, State Senator Jason Lewis and State Representatives Paul Donato, Steve Ultrino and Mike Day were in attendance and greeted constituents. City Council President Debbie DeMaria, Ward 4 Councillor Ryan O’Malley (who also serves as MDCC Ward 4 chair) and Ward 6 Councillor David Camell, along with Ward 2 School Committee Member Rob McCarthy, worked the crowd as well. Former Mayor Ed Lucey and recent former MDCC Chair Greg Lucey attended, and everyone was particularly pleased to spend time with former longtime MDCC Chair Joe Lawless.
Candidates for Lieutenant Governor Quentin Palfrey and Jimmy Tingle discussed what’s at stake in this election and the importance of electing a Democratic Governor and Lt. Governor into office this November. Donna Patalano, candidate for District Attorney, and Samantha Hammar, candidate for State Senate, spoke with the crowd about their campaigns for those offices.
As always, several members of Democratic City and Town Committees from Melrose, Reading and Wakefield were in attendance to support their neighbor Committee. (MDCC members faithfully attend fundraisers for our neighboring Democratic Committees each year.) MDCC was also pleased to welcome Wakefield Town Councillor Mehreen Butt, who is also a member of the Wakefield Democratic Town Committee.
Attendees heard from several special guests, including Tonijoy Pimental, who is president of the newly formed Malden High School Democrats chapter, and Gina Mosca, a volunteer with Swing Left who spoke about how MDCC and Swing Left are organizing to flip Congress to the Democrats this November to be a check on the Trump Administration. Activities for the #BlueWave2018 campaign include phone banking, door knocking and postcard writing to out-of-state voters in swing districts primarily in Maine and New Hampshire. Also attending as special guests were the Chair of Massachusetts High School Democrats, Amanda Westlake, and the Vice Chairman of High School Democrats of America, Talat Aman.
Attendees were particularly moved to hear from special invited guests USWA Local 12012 President John Buonopane and President of USWA Local 12003 Joe Kyrlo. Together they represent the 1,200 National Grid workers who continue to be locked out of their jobs without pay and health care since June 25. After the event, Councillor Peg Crowe, on behalf of the MDCC, delivered large trays of hamburgers and hotdogs to the striking workers standing out on Charles Street.
Masters of Ceremony MDCC Chair Amanda Smith and MDCC Vice Chair Adam Weldai, with able assistance from MDCC Vice Chair Kathleen Manning Hall, welcomed speakers and attendees – and encouraged folks to purchase new MDCC T-shirts! Other MDCC officers present to welcome guests were Treasurer Frank Molis, Secretary Lauren Fowler, Ward 1 Chair John Moreschi, Ward 3 Chair Linda Thorsen and Ward 5 Chair Alicia Garza.
