Gilligan shines on the mound for Golden Tornadoes baseball
By Julian Cardillo
Despite suffering an early-season loss, the Malden baseball team got a strong performance on the mound from pitcher Kevin Gilligan. The reigning Northeastern Conference All-Star pitched a complete game against Lynn English, allowing three hits and no earned runs in the Golden Tornadoes’ 2-0 loss. Gilligan had eight strikeouts in the affair, doing his part to keep Malden in winning contention.
Lynn English opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Gilligan gave up a leadoff triple, two runs coming through before Gilligan retired the side.
Malden struggled to crack through Gilligan’s counterpart, Lynn English pitcher Dax Billingsley, who threw five shutout innings. That said, the Golden Tornadoes got runners on first and third three separate times, narrowly missing their chance to tie or win the game. Malden’s last-gasp effort came in the top of the seventh, when they stranded a base runner to end the contest.
The girls’ track team defeated Marblehead, 71-65, this week. Rachel Eaglin took first in the 400 hurdles, the 100 hurdles and the high jump; Eaglin took second in the long jump.
The Golden Tornadoes’ boys’ tennis team remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 3-0 on the year after taking down Revere, 3-2.
