Special to The Advocate
The City of Malden’s Health and Human Services Department was proud to announce the installation of a Missing Man Table at the entrance of the Malden Senior Center. The display commemorates the nation’s 250th anniversary while reaffirming Malden’s unwavering commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans. Following the transition of the Veterans Services Office under the Health and Human Services Department, the City has expanded its efforts to raise awareness of the programs, resources and support available to veterans and their families. The Missing Man Table serves as both a powerful tribute and a meaningful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our nation.
Also known as the Fallen Comrade Table, the Missing Man Table is traditionally displayed at formal military dinners, banquets and memorial ceremonies to honor service members who are missing in action or prisoners of war, or who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Each element of the table carries profound symbolic meaning:
- Table: represents the everlasting concern and remembrance for those who remain missing.
- White tablecloth: symbolizes the purity of intention with which service members answered their nation’s call.
- Single red rose: honors the loved ones who continue to keep faith while awaiting answers.
- Yellow ribbon: represents hope for the safe return of those who remain missing.
- Slice of lemon: serves as a reminder of the bitter fate endured by those who were captured or are missing.
- Pinch of salt: symbolizes the tears shed by families through years of uncertainty and waiting.
- Bible: reflects the strength and comfort found through faith.
- Inverted glass: signifies that the missing cannot be present to share a toast.
- Empty chair: represents those who are absent but never forgotten.
By placing the Missing Man Table at the Senior Center, the City of Malden hopes to encourage veterans and their families to learn more about the services, benefits and assistance available through the Veterans Services Office. The display also provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of those who have served.
The City of Malden remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the veteran community and ensuring that every veteran receives the recognition, respect and resources they have earned through their service to our nation.
