After rolling to the District 16 championship, the Peabody 12-year-old Little League All-Star softball team continued its dominant pitching by shutting out Westfield in back-to-back games to earn the state title Sunday in Woburn.
Abby Bettencourt hurled a 7-0 shutout in the first game, and No. 2 pitcher Avery Grieco was called upon to work game two. Grieco did so effectively by tossing five innings, giving up just two hits and fanning five in a 2-0 victory. Bettencourt would come in to pitch the final two innings and seal the deal to send Peabody to the regionals, where they begin competition against Pennsylvania in Bristol, Conn., this weekend.
Coached by Mark Bettencourt, Peabody jumped on Westfield quickly in the first contest, scoring three times in the first inning. Abby Bettencourt socked three hits and stole four bases, and Logan Lomasney had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Kiley Doolin also finished with two hits.
Other players with key first-game hits were Mia Philbrick, Lizzie Bettencourt, Jessica Steed and Alanna Sweeney. Grieco also drilled a big two-run double late in the game.
The second game was a lot less offensive as Peabody faced Westfield’s ace, Marleigh Monroe. Still, Peabody came out on top as Abby Bettencourt had two hits, including a triple. She was helped along by Payton Petrillo, Grieco and Doolin, who each swatted two hits in the 2-0 championship-clinching win.
