Revere Sports Round-Up

Cravotta’s two home runs lead Revere past Lynn English

 By Julian Cardillo

The Revere baseball team has split its last two games, their latest result coming on Wednesday in an 8-7 victory over Lynn English. Revere got off to a 5-0 start against Lynn English and held on enough on defense to secure the win. Matt Cravotta was the MVP of the game; he hit two home runs and earned a save on the mound after coming on in relief in the fifth inning.

On Saturday, the Patriots fell to Lynn Classical, 4-0. “We couldn’t get the bats going and Classical’s pitcher had a very good command of the zone,” said Revere coach Mike Manning. “He actually only walked one guy.”

That said, Revere had some promising moments. Revere’s relief pitcher, James O’Donnell, retired the Classical side in order in the fifth.

Revere’s next game is on Friday at home against Swampscott.

Lady Patriots’ softball team making due with rainy weather

The Revere softball team keeps finding ways to win despite its young roster. On Wednesday, the Lady Patriots improved to 7-1 on the season by taking a blowout victory from Lynn English, using mostly junior varsity players.

“English is a really inexperienced team, but I give them a lot of credit for fighting until the end and playing hard,” said Joe Ciccarello – whose team won in five innings – “But we felt this game was better-suited for our younger players in the junior varsity program. In any case, we’re 7-1.”

Though some of the team’s more senior players got to rest against English, the break came with a cost. Some untimely rain has postponed two Patriots games in recent days, meaning most of the starters haven’t played since last week,

“I’ve got some of my pitchers telling me they haven’t played competitively since last Monday,” Ciccarello said. “I feel for them. This weather, Wednesday and Thursday notwithstanding, has been awful for us and a pain to work around. But that’s just how it is in New England.”

The Patriots play Salem on Monday in a key Northeastern Conference battle. Ciccarello is hoping his players can keep up their momentum. “Salem is a very strong team with good pitching,” he said. “Honestly, from here on out every game is going to be a battle. We have to be ready.”
