Revere High’s football team is looking to put a difficult night in Gloucester behind it and get back to .500 this week against Chelsea, while the Patriots’ volleyball team put together a 2-1 week and both cross-country teams showed encouraging progress at Belle Isle.
Football Pats turns page after Gloucester loss
Not much went right for Revere in a 42-6 loss to Gloucester.
The Fishermen took control almost immediately, capitalizing on Revere turnovers and dominant line play to build a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and a 35-0 advantage by halftime.
“Total domination and so many mistakes by us in the first 10 minutes of the game just knocked us totally out of the game,” Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said.
Revere fumbled deep in its own territory early, and another turnover on special teams compounded the problems. Gloucester repeatedly took possession with a short field.
“Before you know it, they get the ball four times inside that 20-yard line, and they got four touchdowns,” Cicatelli said. “You gotta’ stop making mistakes, especially, you know, fundamentals, the penalties, things like that.”
“Their offensive line, defensive line, best we’ve seen,” Cicatelli added.
There was one late bright spot. Sophomore Ismael Romero-Gonzalez broke loose for a 95-yard touchdown run with under two minutes remaining to prevent the shutout.
“We like this kid,” Cicatelli said. “He’s a sophomore. He’s a good player.”
Rather than dwell on the loss, Cicatelli opted not to review the game film with his players and immediately shifted the focus to Chelsea (at Chelsea, Friday, Oct. 2, 6 p.m.) and an opportunity for Revere to improve to 2-2.
The Patriots remain banged up. Lots of key players are sidelined.
Revere should get a boost from the return of Jose Fuentes, who is expected to see time at tailback. Cicatelli also plans to give Sergio Peguero another opportunity at quarterback and lean more heavily on the running game.
Chelsea presents its own challenges, particularly with its team speed and running backs.
“They’re not bad,” Cicatelli said. “They’ve got a lot of team speed on defense. They sprint to the ball. They’ve got a real good back — actually, two ample backs. I told the kids, if they get loose, you’ve got to make sure we tackle them.”
Volleyball goes 2-1 during busy week
Revere volleyball improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Greater Boston League after winning two of three matches.
Coach Emilie Clemons’ Patriots opened the week with a 3-2 victory at Lynn English. Haley Peralta had 11 kills, Sarah Lechheb added eight and Anna Doucette finished with six aces, 13 assists and five kills.
Revere then dropped a 3-2 decision at Malden despite another 11 kills from Peralta and seven from Lechheb.
The Patriots responded with a 3-0 sweep of Swampscott. Sofia Guzman led the attack with 12 kills, while Peralta and Lechheb had seven apiece. Doucette handed out 20 assists and added three aces, and Saray Mosquera Orozco contributed five aces and seven digs.
Peralta totaled 29 kills for the week, Lechheb had 22 and Guzman finished with 18. For the season, Peralta leads Revere with 57 kills, followed closely by Lechheb with 52 and Guzman with 48.
Revere has three home matches this week against Somerville, Everett and Essex Tech.
Girls’ cross-country races past Chelsea
Revere’s girls’ cross-country team earned a 20-43 victory over Chelsea at Belle Isle, with several newcomers continuing to make significant strides.
Senior Emma DeCrosta led Revere by finishing second overall in 23:43. Jaelyn Torres was third in 30:05, followed by Tram Vu in fourth at 32:30 and Afomiya Wondemagegnhu in fifth at 32:48.
Coach Katie Sinnott also saw personal-best race paces from sophomores Torres, Wondemagegnhu, Dakota Hernandez and Thy Vu. All four are new to cross country.
Kayla Men placed sixth, Hernandez seventh and Vu eighth for the Patriots.
Stamatopoulos wins for boys’ cross-country
Revere’s boys’ fell to Chelsea, 25-35, but coach Michael Flynn came away encouraged after every Patriot improved his time from the previous week on the 2.89-mile Belle Isle course.
Kosta Stamatopoulos won the race in 17:14, edging Chelsea’s Diogo Yogi by one second.
Luke Imperato was Revere’s next finisher, taking ninth in 20:01. Emanuel Taylor placed 11th in 21:28, Wei Chen was 12th in 21:46 and Javier Rosa followed in 13th at 22:05. Nicholas Rosa, Noah Shanley and Max Brown rounded out Revere’s finishers.
Flynn said he was “very proud” of the across-the-board improvement from his runners.
Girls soccer improves to 3-1-1
Revere girls soccer continued its promising start under coach Ariana Rivera and enters its next stretch of games at 3-1-1.
The Patriots earned a 2-1 victory over Lynn Classical behind goals from Emily Torres and Sophia Correa. Torres scored on a free kick, while Correa converted in the first half off an assist from Amilee Hernandez.
Revere later suffered its first loss of the season, 3-0, against Everett. The Patriots spent much of the match defending and struggled to connect through the midfield and build their attack.
They bounced back with a 4-2 victory over Lynn Classical to improve to 3-1-1.
Weather also affected Revere’s schedule. The Patriots’ game against Brockton has been moved to Oct. 17 at home, while a postponed matchup with Whittier Tech will be rescheduled for a date to be determined.
