(Editor’s Note: The town recently issued this press release on behalf of the Board of Assessors.)
The Town of Saugus Board of Assessors wishes to inform residents that a variety of statutory exemptions are available to reduce the property tax burden for qualifying taxpayers.
Property tax relief exemptions are available for qualifying residents in the following categories:
- Disabled veterans with a disability rating of 10 percent or higher
- Blind persons
- Seniors ages 70 and older (income and asset limitations apply)
- Surviving spouses and surviving minors (asset limitations apply)
Qualified applicants must file for property tax exemptions every year, as past exemptions aren’t automatically carried over to the next year. The Assessors Department will mail out applications at the end of September to all existing applicants.
If you are new to the program, do not receive an application in the mail, or have questions about eligibility for the property tax exemptions, please contact the Assessors Department at 781-231-4130 or 781-231-4133, or visit the Assessors Department office at Saugus Town Hall for more information.
All completed property tax exemption applications and required supporting documentation must be received and stamped in by the Assessors Department no later than 5 p.m. on April 1, 2027. Please note that this deadline cannot be extended or waived by the assessor for any reason. Incomplete applications or submissions received after the deadline will result in a loss of exemption rights for the tax year, as the assessor, by law, cannot grant an exemption.
