The National Association of Social Workers, Massachusetts Chapter (NASW-MA) has endorsed State Senator Jason Lewis for reelection in the 5th Middlesex District, recognizing his tireless efforts to advance healthcare for all and social justice.
“NASW-MA endorses candidates with a proven commitment to promoting social and economic justice as well as providing unimpeded access to services for all citizens,” said NASW-MA Political Director Sophie Hansen. “Senator Lewis has been both an ally to social workers and the populations of individuals they serve. He has been the lead sponsor on social work priorities, including ensuring telehealth parity, expanding health insurance coverage for children and promoting public health through the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund. When he’s not leading the charge on these issues, he is the cosponsor, lending his support to our most crucial issues. He also always makes the time to speak with our membership – this past April he spoke with social work students and professionals at our annual lobby day about his work on the LGBTQ conversion therapy ban. We are proud to have an ally like Senator Lewis in the State House and look forward to continuing this partnership.”
“Social workers do incredible work on behalf of some of the most vulnerable people in the Commonwealth, and I’m very proud to have the support of the NASW,” said Senator Lewis. “We are partners in vital efforts to improve our state’s mental healthcare system, public health, civil rights and economic justice for working families.”
Senator Lewis believes that access to quality, affordable healthcare should be a basic human right. He led the effort to create a first-in-the-nation Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund, providing funding for community-based health and wellness programs that lower rates of preventable chronic diseases, reduce health disparities and contain healthcare costs. He also sponsored legislation that was signed into law to ensure that all children in Massachusetts are able to receive all recommended immunizations.
Senator Lewis has also been a strong advocate to strengthen the state’s mental health services and address the crisis of substance use disorder impacting our communities, by expanding prevention, treatment and recovery efforts. In particular, he has been a leader on efforts to strengthen youth substance abuse–prevention and education, including tobacco, vaping, marijuana, alcohol and opioids.
The National Association of Social Workers, Massachusetts Chapter is the largest professional social work organization in the state. Its 6,400 members work in a broad range of settings, including hospitals and other health-care settings, community agencies, government, academia, business, nursing homes, schools and private practice.
Senator Lewis will be on the ballot for reelection in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. To learn more about his reelection campaign and get involved, please visit ElectJasonLewis.com or find the campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
