Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative families serve homeless in Boston

On August 15, parishioners from St. Maria Goretti and Our Lady of the Assumption in Lynnfield volunteered at the Paulist Center’s “Wednesday Night Supper Club” near the Boston Common. Every Wednesday evening, volunteers serve free, hot meals to 160-200 homeless men and women in the Paulist Center’s downstairs hall. Pam Guerrieo, Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative’s Faith Formation Coordinator for Grades 7-10, said she organized this outreach “as a service opportunity that families could participate in together, and to continue to remind us that our church extends beyond the doors of our building.”

African priest serving at Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative during August

For the past four years, priests from the Society of African Missions (SMA Fathers) have assisted the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative for one month during the summer. This relationship provides a unique opportunity for sharing cultures, and learning what makes us different and what makes us the same. This year, Father Francis Barka Nado, SMA, from the Central Republic of Africa, is living and working in the parishes of St. Maria Goretti (SMG) and Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) for the month of August. Father Francis has quickly become part of our community – celebrating Mass, attending ministry meetings, joining in parish social events and sharing his smile and personal…

Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative funds two water wells in Zambia

The first of two African water wells funded by the parishioners of the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative is complete and providing clean, easily assessable water to a Zambian community. For the past several summers, priests from the Society of African Missions (SMA) have come to Lynnfield to assist at St. Maria Goretti and Our Lady of the Assumption parishes. Through the friendships that have been built between parishioners and the visiting SMA priests, congregants learned of two Zambian communities’ desperate need for clean drinking water at locations that can be safely accessed by villagers. Throughout this year’s Lenten season, the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative’s social justice group, Justice for Jesus, led the…

Zambian Friends send thanks to Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative

For several years missionary priests from the Society of African Missions have assisted the parishes of the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative during the summer, allowing their resident priests some time off. Father Don Phiri, a priest from Zambia, spent August of 2016 living in Lynnfield, celebrating Mass, joining in church events, and sharing stories of his homeland. As a result of this friendship, the congregants of St. Maria Goretti and Our Lady of the Assumption chose to make their 2017 Lenten almsgiving focused on raising funds for the various needs of the Zambian community in which Father Don Phiri serves. In total, parishes were able to raise $5,700 during last year’s…
