Pioneers hockey team agonizingly loses to Wilmington to begin the postseason
Third-seeded Lynnfield bows out way too early By Joe Mitchell Entering the Division 3 North state tournament as the third seed with a 12-5-3 record, it made the outcome of Lynnfield’s first-round game even more frustrating. The Hockey Pioneers were squaring off against Wilmington (12-9), the 14th seed, to begin the postseason on Tuesday night at Watertown. The Lynnfield boys had their opportunities to put multiple pucks in the net, but in the end coach Jon Gardner’s squad left the Ryan Arena shaking their heads in the wake of a heartbreaking 2-1 loss, thus eliminating them way too early from the state tournament fun. But they weren’t the only…

Pioneers Hockey team celebrates Senior Day with a satisfying win over perennial powerhouse Westwood
Division 2 North state tournament pairings will be announced this weekend By Joe Mitchell (Advocate photos by Dave Sokol) It was a perfect Senior Day for the Lynnfield High School hockey team last Saturday, Feb. 17, in Peabody. It was first an opportunity for coach Jon Gardner to recognize his six graduating seniors for their contributions to the program throughout the past four years. They included Cooper Marengi, Tyler Murphy, Joey Mack, Robbie Brandano, Zach Rothwell and Kyle Nekorski. The Pioneers then defeated the perennial state tournament team and South Shore powerhouse, Westwood, to the tune of 4-1. The local sextet followed up that triumph with a frustrating…

Pioneers hockey team clinches postseason berth for third straight year
Senior Day set for Saturday at noon at Peabody vs. Westwood By Joe Mitchell The Lynnfield High School boys’ hockey team (10-4-2 overall, 5-3-2 in the Cape Ann League) has clinched a berth in the Division 2 North state tournament for the third year in a row after defeating Triton last Thursday, Feb. 8, 3-2. The Pioneers then lost an emotional game to Masco last Saturday by the exact same score, 3-2, in the wake of the sudden passing of former Chieftains player Brandon Lafata. He was one of their senior stars last year, and Lynnfield coach Jon Gardner remembers him scoring two goals against his club just one…

Pioneers hockey team loses battle for first place with rival Newburyport
Lynnfield winds down regular-season schedule with six games left before the postseason By Joe Mitchell The Lynnfield High School boys’ hockey team (9-3-1 overall, 5-2-1 in the Cape Ann League) lost just twice so far this year in the Cape Ann League, and both times it was against the Newburyport Clippers, authors of a 12-game unbeaten streak. But the Pioneers have to think they are snake-bitten when they play their worthy league foes, especially in their latest battle last Saturday at Newburyport’s Graf Arena. The home team ended up winning this latest classic, 2-0. However, it was just a 1-0 game throughout until they were able to seal the…

Scoreboard aside, Hockey Pioneers dominate Amesbury
Lynnfield needs just one more point to clinch state tourney berth By Joe Mitchell Sometimes the final score has nothing to do with the actual game. Last Saturday against Amesbury in Peabody, the Lynnfield High School boys’ hockey team controlled the game territorially with a decided edge in shots on goal, 41-10. But the scoreboard read otherwise. However, it was still a win for Coach John Gardner’s team to the tune of 4-3, who are 9-2-1 overall, 5-1-1 in the Cape Ann League. “Our schedule has been kind of weird lately with midterms and cancellations, but now we have five tough games coming up against postseason-contending teams,” said Gardner.…

Hockey Pioneers get by Masco to win that next battle for first place
By Joe Mitchell In another battle for first place in the Cape Ann League, the Lynnfield High School boys’ hockey team defeated Masco, 4-1, at Peabody on Jan. 20. The Pioneers are now 4-1-1 in the CAL, and 8-2-1 overall, while the Chieftains dropped to third. But Lynnfield coach Jon Gardner expects the race to the top to go right down to the wire as these two teams continue to chase the Newburyport Clippers. In Saturday’s game, the Pioneers went back and forth with Masco. Joey Mack notched the locals’ first lamplighter halfway through the first period on a solo effort. Masco tied it up on the power play…
