Bambinelli Sunday celebrated at OLA and SMG

Bambinelli Sunday celebrated at OLA and SMG LYNNFIELD – On Sunday, December 16, both St. Maria Goretti Parish (SMG) and Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Parish celebrated “Bambinelli Sunday.” This tradition was begun by Pope St. John Paul II and is celebrated on the Third Sunday of Advent, also called Gaudete (“Rejoice”) Sunday. He invited people to come to St. Peter’s Square in Rome and bring their “bambinelli” or Baby Jesus figurines from their home crèches and nativity scenes. Then, he would bless them and people would take them home and wrap them. This becomes the first present to be opened on Christmas day to remind the whole family…

Grade 2 students participate in First Penance retreat at OLA Church

On Saturday, November 10, Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Parish’s Grade 2 Faith Formation students participated in a First Penance retreat. This brings about an oft-asked question: “What could a child at the tender age of seven or eight have done so wrong that they need to confess?” And in that question lies the common misunderstanding of the Sacrament of Confession (also known as Penance or Reconciliation). It is not about presenting yourself for admonishment and punishment, but rather about building a positive relationship with God based on trust, kindness and mercy. OLA School students celebrate All Saints Day

In anticipation of Halloween, popular culture seems to dedicate the entire month of October to images of ghosts, monsters and witches. But November 1 is the Feast of All Saints in the Catholic Church. It is a time to celebrate those who have modeled the very best of humanity and to emulate them in contemporary life. Kindergarten students and their teacher at Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) School took this to heart and attended the All Saints Day Mass dressed as their favorite saints and holy figures.

Children who recently received their First Holy Communion were invited to return in their white outfits, and all other children were invited to join in the procession, and placed flowers by the statue.
