    North Shore Baseball

North Shore Baseball Peabody puts firm hold on 1st place with 7-1 win over Sox By Greg Phipps Out to avenge a recent loss to the Swampscott Sox, the Peabody Champions did just that by coming away with a convincing 7-1 victory in North Shore Baseball League action Monday evening at the Swampscott Middle School Field. Mark Shorey set the tone for Peabody early by smoking a two-run homer over the right field fence in the top of the first inning. Derek Lyons had reached base with the first of his three hits and came in ahead of Shorey for a quick 2-0 advantage. The Sox scored their only run…

Sr. Legion earns 1st-round playoff win; season ends with 1-0 loss

By Greg Phipps The Middleton-Peabody (M-P) Senior Legion baseball team took part in two close District 8 League playoff battles – a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Haverhill in the postseason opener followed by a 1-0 second-round defeat at Andover – seeing its season end as a result. In last Saturday’s first-round game at Essex Tech Field, M-P found itself trailing Haverhill, 1-0, entering the bottom of the fifth inning. That’s when M-P finally broke through against lefty Will Carpenter, who had held M-P to only two hits up to that point. Chris Masta led off with a single and Evan Mullen bunted him to second base. Masta scored the tying…

Loss to Methuen drops Jr. Legion team to 2-6

By Greg Phipps After a scoreless first inning, the floodgates opened as visiting Methuen erupted for five runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back, rolling to a convincing 14-2 win over Middleton-Peabody (M-P) in Junior Legion baseball action Tuesday evening at Bezemes Diamond. The defeat dropped the M-P Juniors to 2-6 on the season. Coming off a tough one-run loss to Haverhill on Monday, M-P tried to get back in Tuesday’s contest with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second frame. Chris Faraca scored the first run on a bases-loaded walk, and Simon Kotarski came in on a sacrifice fly by…

Close out call sinks Sr. Legion team

By Greg Phipps Down to its final out, the Middleton-Peabody (M-P) Senior Legion baseball squad came within inches of rallying to tie and perhaps even win Monday’s extra-inning District 8 League contest against Andover at Essex Tech Field. Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth, M-P’s Jake Irvine doubled with one out and eventually came around to score on an infield single by Chris Masta. With two outs and Masta at second base, Cooper Marengi bounced a single up the middle and Masta raced for home. He slid head first and appeared to touch the plate ahead of the throw and tag but was called out, ending the game…

Gustin, Dawe earn NEC co-MVP honors

By Greg Phipps Peabody High School sports achieved a rare feat this spring, as players from both the baseball and softball teams earned Most Valuable Player recognition in the Northeastern Conference (NEC). Several other Peabody players were named to this year’s all-league squads as well. Senior shortstop Jake Gustin was named league co-MVP alongside Beverly High’s Spencer Brown, while Tianna Dawe, Peabody’s softball ace, also shared the co-MVP nod with Marblehead pitcher Charlotte Plakans. It was the second MVP trophy for Gustin, who received the honor last year. He was exceptional at the plate in 2018, hitting .524 in the regular season with 14 RBIs, 16 steals and 19 runs…

Tanners baseball team edges Lawrence in playoff opener, loses in round two

By Greg Phipps It looked as if the Peabody baseball team might suffer an all-too-familiar postseason fate last Thursday at Bezemes Diamond. But this time the result went in the Tanners’ favor as they were able to stave off a seventh-inning rally by the Lawrence Lancers and hold on to a 3-1 first-round victory in Div. I North action. Having lost some heartbreaking first-round contests in recent years, seventh-seeded Peabody escaped a bases loaded, one-out jam unscathed in the top of the sixth inning and made it out of the seventh-inning after No. 10 seed Lawrence scored an unearned tally and had runners on second and third with two outs.…

Baseball: Tanners end season at 12-8, gear up for playoffs

By Greg Phipps Before the season started, Peabody head baseball coach Mark Bettencourt wasn’t sure what to expect from this year’s largely inexperienced squad. Overall, he has to be feeling pretty good after his Tanners produced 12 wins and are heading to the Division I tournament. Pitching has been one of Peabody’s biggest strengths, and the Tanners received another solid effort last Saturday. Junior Eddie Campbell hurled a complete-game shutout, his fifth win of the season, in a 7-0 win over Wakefield in the first round of the annual Geanoulis Memorial Tournament at Bezemes Diamond. The Tanners then suffered a 4-0 loss to Andover in the tourney title game on…
