Peabody girls fall to Beverly after previous night’s OT loss

By Greg Phipps Coming off a tough overtime loss to Everett the night before, the Peabody girls’ basketball team fell behind by 21 points to the Beverly Panthers in the first half last Friday night at the PHS Gym. The Tanners never recovered on their way to a 49-29 defeat. Peabody also lost at Newburyport on Monday to drop to 6-10 on the season. The Tanners hosted Gloucester on Tuesday and were in the position of having to win their final four regular-season games to qualify for the postseason tournament. “We had a lot of shots around the basket that didn’t fall for us tonight. We just couldn’t buy a…

Tanner boys make playoffs with win over Vikings

By Greg Phipps Not only did the Peabody boys’ basketball team cement a playoff berth with their 68-55 victory over the Winthrop Vikings on Feb. 6 at the PHS Gym, but they played an all-around solid game and look to be gaining more confidence with just three regular-season games remaining. Peabody entered this week’s action sporting a 10-7 overall record. The Tanners dropped a 67-60 decision at Beverly last Friday, Feb. 9. In the Winthrop game, Peabody was coming off a 32-point blowout victory over Revere the night before. The Tanners fell behind by nine points in the first quarter of their Senior Night game but quickly recovered and ended…

Tanner girls pull away from Magicians

By Greg Phipps The Peabody girls’ basketball team held on to their hopes for a postseason berth by earning two important Northeastern Conference road wins last week. Coming off a win at Salem earlier in the week, the Tanners traveled to take on the Marblehead Magicians last Friday and overcame a quick 8-0 deficit to eventually pull away with a solid 44-22 victory. Falling behind by eight just three minutes into last Friday’s contest forced Peabody head coach Stan McKeen to call a timeout. From that point on, the Tanners would go on to outscore the hosts by 30 points. Liz Zaiter did much of the damage offensively in the…

    Peabody boys sink Salem, 59-53

By Greg Phipps One key stretch early in the third quarter proved to be the decisive turning point for the Peabody boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night in their 59-53 Northeastern Conference (NEC) win over the Salem Witches at the PHS Gym. Having been outscored 10-0 to finish the second quarter, Peabody saw the visiting Witches drill two consecutive three-pointers to increase a 25-20 halftime lead to 31-20 early in the third. Tanners head coach Thad Broughton called a timeout and the game proceeded to take a drastic turn in Peabody’s favor from that moment on. The Tanners came back with a 14-0 run that included four three-pointers (one each…

After fast start, Tanners girls’ basketball team loses to Somerville

By Greg Phipps The Peabody girls’ basketball team played perhaps one its best quarters of the season during the first eight minutes of play last Friday night at the PHS Gym. Unfortunately the next three periods didn’t measure up, and the Tanners saw an early double-digit advantage dissipate quickly in an eventual 54-41 loss to the Somerville Highlanders. Catherine Manning and Liz Zaiter combined for 13 points to carry the Tanners to a hefty 18-5 lead after one period. From there, Peabody’s offense suddenly went stale, as it managed just 23 points over the remainder of the contest. Meanwhile, the Highlanders found their rhythm, led by Melina Pimentel with a…

Peabody boys’ basketball team edges Medford in see-saw battle

By Greg Phipps Peabody boys head basketball coach Thad Broughton joked that his team’s seventh victory of the season Tuesday night gave him a few more gray hairs. But he would gladly accept a little more gray, as the Tanners turned back the Medford Mustangs, 56-53, in a back-and-forth battle at the PHS Gym. Peabody improved to 7-4 overall and move on to face Somerville in an away contest Friday night. Close games have proven to turn out mostly in the Tanners’ favor so far this season. They were coming off a dramatic 54-53 win over crosstown rival Bishop Fenwick two days earlier. “I’m so proud of these kids. Medford…

Peabody girls’ basketball team grinds out win over Bulldogs

By Greg Phipps In a contest that saw both teams as cold as ice from the field, the Peabody girls’ basketball team did enough to defeat the Lynn English Bulldogs, 31-23, last Friday night at the PHS Gym. It was just Peabody’s second home game of the season. The Tanners managed just two points in the final quarter (both coming on free throws in the last minute of play) but were still able to hold on for the win. Visiting Lynn English never produced above single digits in any quarter. Peabody entered the fourth period holding a seemingly secure 29-15 lead before going pointless over the first 7:30 of the…
