Tanners’ comeback falls just short in 64-61 loss

By Greg Phipps The Peabody High School boys’ basketball team nearly pulled off a stunning win but weren’t able to complete a major comeback bid in a 64-61 loss to the Malden Golden Tornadoes last Thursday night at the PHS Gym. The Tanners dug themselves an early 15-point hole and were never able to fully recover. But they certainly made the visiting Tornadoes sweat it out in the final quarter. The Tanners, who fell to 1-1 on the early season, had difficulty offensively in the opening period and found themselves faced with a 20-5 shortfall on just two field goals entering the second stanza. The Tanners, who ended up losing in the preliminary round to Arlington, finished 9-9-3 overall and are looking to build on last season’s experience. Returning five of their top scorers from last year, Peabody appears primed to make a postseason run. Among the key returners are captains Sarah…

McCue also said that he will be working with the Close Up Foundation, which specializes in organizing field trips around the country to educate students about the inner workings of democracy. JV success brings promise for Tanners girls’ basketball

By Greg Phipps The Peabody High School girls’ basketball team will be hard-pressed to duplicate last season’s performance in which they reeled off 11 straight Northeastern Conference wins and won 13 of their last 17 games. But with a host of first-year players from last season’s 18-0 junior varsity unit, perhaps that possibility is not such a long shot. That said, Peabody lost a number of top-notch seniors from the 2016-17 team that finished 14-8 overall and advanced to the semifinal round of the Div. I North playoffs. Among those departed are guards Melissa Gray and Katie Wallace and key contributors Alyssa Alperen and Chinenye Onwuogo. Head coach Stan McKeen…
