    Saugus wrestling coaches retire after banquet

(Advocate photo by Anthony Capobianco) — Saugus High School wrestling Coach Rudy Howard announced his retirement during the team’s banquet on Wednesday at Prince Pizzeria. It was a decision two years in the making. “I’ve been looking for the last two years – trying to transition,” Howard said. “It’s just time.” Howard’s longtime assistant coach, Darren McCullough, is also walking away from coaching.     One sport ends, another begins for Saugus’s Joe Alba

    By Tony Capobianco   Saugus senior captain Joe Alba hung up his wrestling shoes for the final time in his high school career and quickly grabbed his spikes for the upcoming track season.     Saugus Wrestling: Alba’s career concluded in sections but still hope for McCullough

    By Tony Capobianco MELROSE – Saturday’s D3 North Sectional Tournament at Melrose High School was do or die time for Saugus senior wrestlers Dan McCullough and Joe Alba. One way or the other, the two captains saw their team start with a full roster and slowly but severely sorely erode to just five by the time of sections.   Alba pinned Matt Beauchesne of Tyngsborough in the opening round of the 152 pound bracket.     Senior grapplers leading youthful Sachems by example By Tony Capobianco Any team, no matter the sport, is playing with house money if it has a young roster. Any victory becomes precious and shows a far brighter future in the horizon. In the case of the Saugus High School wrestling team, despite its youth and injury issues, the Sachems have won dual meets against Gloucester, Tyngsboro, Essex Tech, Malden, Randolph and, most recently, Peabody.
