Public Hearing Set for June 7 on MBTA Communities Zoning Law for Multi-Family Housing

The City of Malden invites members of the community to attend a public hearing on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 6 pm in Malden City Hall, Herbert L. Jackson Council Chamber, 215 Pleasant Street, Malden, with options for remote access and participation in the hearing to be provided by Urban Media Arts and Zoom.

The City Council is hosting this hearing to receive public comment on potential zoning scenarios being considered to achieve compliance with the new state law known as the MBTA Communities Zoning Law (M.G.L. c. 40A, Section 3A).  This law requires Malden and other communities with an MBTA rapid transit station to enact zoning laws that allow the development of multifamily housing by right no later than December 31, 2023.  This public hearing is the first phase of community engagement for the project and will be followed by an online survey conducted over the summer.  Stantec Urban Places, the City consultant for the project, teams with Mayor Gary Christenson’s working group, comprised of City staff from the Office of Strategic Planning & Community Development, City Planner, Councilor-at-Large Craig Spadafora and Councilor Steve Winslow.  For more information about the project, please contact City Planner Michelle Romero at mromero@cityofmalden.org
