After taking a couple of weeks off for the Christmas break, the Everett High School boys and girls indoor track teams went back to work on Tuesday (Jan. 2) with a meet against Malden at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury.

As a refresher, the Everett boys (2-1) swept both Lynn Classical and Chelsea to begin the season with perfect results on Dec. 15, while the girls (1-2) beat Chelsea, but lost to Lynn Classical.

Veteran coach Jehu Cimea thought there were a number of memorable performances against the Golden Tornadoes. For instance, the school’s girls’ shotput record was broken when senior captain Layla Betancur-Cardona threw 32-5.25. Fellow teammate and senior captain Darrynn Desrameaux held the previous mark with a throw of 31-11.25. As a result of the record-breaking throw, Betancur-Cardona has qualified for the Division 2 State Meet next month.

On the boys team, sophomore Kayshaun Eveillard also qualified for the state meet when he ran a 37.74 in the 300. Senior high jumpers Donald Michel and Dawens Germain also made states with identical jumps of 5-8.

The boys lost to Malden, 58-42. In the 55-meter dash, Jeremiah Jeanlouis (6.97) came in second. Kayshaun Eveillard (37.74) bested the entire field in the 300. Dawens Germain (1:38.43) experienced similar results in the 600. Lucas Nunez (3:15.26) did the same in the 1,000. Nischal Tamang (5:27.18) was second in the mile. Donald Michel (5:08) and Germain (5:08) topped the ticket in the high jump. Khang Nguyen (18-10), Jones (18-05.25) and Jeremiah Jeanlouis (16-10) swept the long jump. Fabrice Michaud (39-04) ended up second in the shotput. The 4 by 400 relay team of Nunez, Hall, Tamang and Germain (4:08.12) finished second. The 4 by 800 foursome of Barreiros, Eveillard, Nguyen and Jones (1:48.24) also came in second. Anthony Whitlow (12:14.11) finished third in the two mile.

The Everett girls also lost to Malden, 58-28. Yelsa Garcia (8.25) secured the top spot in the 55-meter dash. Isabella Pimenta (8.57) was third. Zyell Cannon-Mathis (50.17) and Angelina Papa (51.59) ended up second and third in the 300.

Milena Antonio (2:11.44) was No. 1 in the 600. Betancur-Cardona (32-05.25) and Desrameaux (30-10.25) went to the head of the class with first- and second-place finishes in the shotput. Papa, Cannon-Mathis, Pimenta and Garcia (2:03.32) teamed up for a second place finish in the 4 by 800 relay. Suzanne Maharjan (16:04.94) broke the tape first in the two mile.

The Tide track crew will now take on Lynn English on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Lewis complex once again, starting at 6 p.m.
