Special to The Advocate
In further celebration of Malden’s 375th anniversary, the City of Malden is excited to announce a Free Walking Tour of Historic Bell Rock Cemetery taking place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, from 4-5:30 p.m. The tour, which will be led by local historian Mark Linehan, offers participants the chance to explore one of Malden’s most significant historical landmarks while learning about our fascinating past.
Located at 60 Medford St., Bell Rock Cemetery dates to 1649 and is the final resting place of many of Malden’s early settlers and prominent figures. As one of the oldest burying grounds in the country, Bell Rock Cemetery serves as a window into the rich history of the city and its role in early Massachusetts.
Tour highlights:
- Graves of Revolutionary War soldiers, highlighting Malden’s contribution to American independence
- Notable residents, including founding families and early community leaders
- Architectural and artistic features of the historic gravestones and monuments
- Insights into 17th– and 18th-century burial practices and customs
The walking tour will be approximately 1.5 hours long and will begin at the Green Street entrance. This tour is best suited for ages 10 and older. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The event is sponsored by the City of Malden’s 375th Anniversary Committee.
