Hello, lovely people of Malden! Allegra Longfellow here, your friendly puppet journalist, brimming with excitement to invite you to a special premiere event: “Allegra’s Postcards from the Malden SeptemberFest”!
This wonderful celebration took over Malden City Hall Plaza and parts of Pleasant Street on September 28, 2024. Music and rhythm filled the air, vendors lined the streets and the joyful faces of kids and adults alike painted the scene as they moved to the beat.
I was thrilled to meet the incredible Debo Ray and her band. Did you know she used to live in Malden? Now she’s shining on stages everywhere, including at Scullers this November 22, with shows at 7 and 9 p.m. The festival also featured captivating Brazilian jazz from Berklee Global Jazz Institute students Thiago Wolf, Arthur Simões, Said Sarabia and André Correa. I even got to learn Haitian dance from Houngan Jean-Sébastien Duvilaire – kids were trying it, too, and the drumming brought the entire festival to life!
Kids had a fantastic time learning how to make Rangoli designs. I tried it, too! Former Mayor Edwin C. Lucey had the honor of pouring the first colors to kick off the festival’s vibrant energy. Artisans and authors showcased their creations along Pleasant Street, and you’ll meet a few of them in my upcoming video premiere this Sunday!
