TORNADO SPORTS ROUNDUP: Malden High Girls Basketball team frozen out by Revere, 29-22

Everett tops Malden Varsity Boys Basketball; Malden Freshman Boys Basketball KOs Medford

By Steve Freker

When Malden’s best player made an early exit from the game in the third quarter, it was like blowing out the last candle on the birthday cake. Before they could hardly finish saying “goodbye” to Golden Tornado senior Amanda Ebenezer after she picked up her 5th personal and fouled out of the game, the party was indeed over. Ebenezer departed with 5:51 remaining in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s Malden-Revere game at the Finn Gym in Malden, seconds after she scored a layup to give the Tornados a slim, but well-earned 22-21 lead.

After that? It was an “All Revere” avalanche, especially on the scoreboard as, unfortunately, Malden never scored another point. Revere went on an 8-0 run to close out the game on its way to a 29-22 final in the Patriots win. Sophomore Manicha Exilhomme led Malden with 7 points and Kimberly Tropnas added 6 points. Malden fell under .500 record-wise for the first time this season with the loss (4-5, 4-3 Greater Boston League).

Head Coach Scott Marino’s Tornados were back in action last night (after press time), hosting GBLer Everett. Malden is back in action next week with another pair of home games, hosting GBL first-place Lynn English on Tuesday, January 21 at the Finn Gym and Malden High at 6:00 p.m. On Thursday, January 23 Malden hosts Lynn English at 6:00 p.m.

Malden boys basketball team falls on the road vs. Everett, 72-45

The Malden Boys Basketball team is still seeking its first win following a trip to Everett Tuesday night. The Tornados trailed by just five at the end of the first quarter and eight points at halftime, 29-21. But the host Crimson Tide used its superior size and depth to wear down the visitors on their way to a 72-45 win over Malden. The loss dropped Malden to 0-9 for the season and 0-6 in the Greater Boston League as the Golden Tornado squad kicked off a three-game road trip. Junior 6-4 center Kaua Fernandes Dias led Malden with 10 points on Tuesday, while senior guard Aidan Brett added 9 points for Malden.

Malden stayed away from home last night at GBLer Somerville – and then against first-place Lynn Classical next week on Tuesday, January 21 (7:00 p.m. start). The Tornados are not home again until a rare Saturday game at 1:00 p.m. on January 25.
