Revere Spring Sports Roundup: Girls track dominates; softball battles through busy week

By Dom Nicastro

The Revere High School spring sports teams put in another full slate of performances last week, highlighted by the girls track and field team capturing the Greater Boston League (GBL) league meet title and rewriting the school record books in the process.

Girls track and field wins another title

“Wow. What a meet!” said Head Coach Racquel MacDonald-Ciambelli after the GBL meet championship, where Revere finished first with 163 points, well ahead of second-place Medford (104). “The score really speaks for how dominant the team was. In total, we had 18 individual PRs.”

Gemma Stamatopoulos led the charge with GBL titles in the 800-meter and high jump (4-foot-8), and a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Her 2:20.37 in the 800 meters was a personal record and less than one second off the school record. “Gemma scored 26 points for the RHS girls team,” said MacDonald-Ciambelli. “She also ran a leg of the 4×400-meter relay at the D1 State Relays and helped break the school record in the Sprint Medley Relay.”

Senior captain Liv Yuong captured the 100-meter hurdles with a PR of 16.85 and also finished second in the long jump with a new school record of 16 feet, 11 inches. “She topped the old school record by almost 8 inches,” MacDonald-Ciambelli said.

Revere also took home the 4×400-meter relay title. The quartet of Rania Hamdani, Olivia Rupp, Jaliyah Manigo and Marwa Riad ran 4:29.78, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field.

Ashley Cabrera Rodriguez placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.06) and third in the triple jump (30-10). Mayahh Ndi finished second in the high jump (4-8), and Marwa Riad took fourth in the triple jump (30-8.5).

Rupp added a runner-up finish in the mile and third in the 800. Gigi Zierten was third in the mile (6:27.88) and helped lead the second-place 4×800 team with Emma DaCrosta, Daniela Santana Baez and Gianna Chiodi. DaCrosta also placed fourth in the 2-mile with a PR of 15:20.05.

The throwers had strong showings: Haley Peralta (third in javelin, 87-5); Amina Larzhal (third in discus, 82-0); Francoise Kodjo (fourth in shotput, 27-11); and Jocelyn Lazo (sixth in javelin, 75-5).

At the MSTCA D1 State Relays, Revere broke six school records:

  • Cabrera Rodriguez set a new triple jump record (33-11.5).
  • The 4×200 relay of Manigo, Ndi, Victoria Osias and Cabrera Rodriguez (1:53.15) and sprint medley of Cabrera Rodriguez, Osias, Hamdani and Stamatopoulos (4:33.73) set new marks.
  • Discus throw relay: Lazo, Larzhal, Hamdani: 61.31 meters.
  • Shotput relay: Kodjo, Aidah Louaddi, Lazo: 23.47 meters.
  • High jump relay: Stamatopoulos, Yuong, Ndi: 4:05 meters.

Softball has ups and downs

Revere softball endured a grueling week, playing six games in eight days. The Patriots picked up big wins over Somerville (17-2), East Boston (18-4) and Malden (21-0) while dropping hard-fought contests to Everett, Medford and Medford again in a doubleheader.

Danni Hope Randall led the way on the mound against Somerville, striking out 12 in five innings. Revere exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, capped by a three-run triple from Caleigh Joyce.

Against East Boston, Joyce had three hits, including a triple and a double, while Frankie Reed and Shayna Smith both drove in multiple runs.

Smith’s bat stayed hot against Malden, going four-for-four with a home run and four RBIs. Randall threw a no-hitter in the 21-0 shutout.

Medford proved to be a tougher matchup, as Revere dropped two games despite out-hitting its opponent, 9-6, in the first contest. Jordan Martelli drove in three runs, and Lea Doucette and Zizi Kalliavas had two hits apiece. Reed went 1-for-3 in the second Medford game and led the team with one RBI. Smith had two hits to pace the offense in the 18-1 loss.

Baseball falls to Somerville

Revere baseball dropped a 6-1 contest to Somerville despite a strong outing from Domenic Bellia, who struck out eight over six innings. Joseph Angiulo drove in the lone Revere run on a sacrifice fly. Frank Annunziata, Brendan Sack and Bellia each had a hit.

Boys volleyball sweeps Everett

Revere swept Everett, 3-0, behind 22 assists from Chris Choc Chavez and 11 assists and seven kills from Larry Claudio.
