Malden High Concert Choir Lights Up the State House

Choral Arts Society makes 20th visit for Holiday Performance

Malden High School’s Concert Choir students enjoyed a unique opportunity to showcase their talents at the Massachusetts State House. This long-anticipated trip allowed the Choral Arts Society to shine following months of dedicated practice and preparation since the school year began. This was the 20th year that the Malden High School group has visited and performed at the State House in Boston.

The day began with a guided tour of the historic State House, an experience many students thoroughly appreciated. “I really liked getting a tour of the State House and hearing the funny stories behind everything and all the historical items in there,” said Waina Coles, a choir member. Jack Colantuoni backed this statement, sharing, “I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it that much, but I ended up really liking the information that the tour guide shared with us.” The tour not only provided a glimpse into Massachusetts’ rich history but also served as a bonding experience for the students.

After the tour, the students took photos with state officials, including the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, before their concert began at noon. The performance, which lasted until 1 p.m., left a lasting impression on the audience and the choir members. “It felt really nice to sing there because it was just a beautiful place to be at,” said Aaliyah Lopes Teixeira, reflecting on the serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere of the State House.

Senior Natalie Keating, the soprano section leader, expressed her appreciation for the experience. “Not only do we get to sing for these very important people, but getting to tour and being in this space where so many important things happen is really cool,” said Keating. “It’s like bridging the gap between regular teenagers and Massachusetts politicians.”

She also noted the companionship and personal growth fostered through Choral Arts. “I’ve met so many cool people through the Malden High School Choral Art Society,” she said.

Todd Cole, the choir director, was proud of how smoothly the day went. “Logistically, everything went really well. All the students did their jobs, whether it was loading the bus or being at the right place at the right time,” Cole said. Musically, the performance was equally successful. “There were a couple of scary moments with tempos, but nothing the audience would pick up on.”

Feedback from those in attendance was overwhelmingly positive. “Our Principal [Chris Mastrangelo] and Superintendent [Timothy Sippel] said it was wonderful, and our mayor said we knocked it out of the park,” Cole shared.

Even visitors from England who happened to be in the performance space described it as “magical.”

Students also reflected on what they cherish most about being part of the Choral Arts Society. Ryleigh Morrow highlighted the community aspect, saying, “Everyone has their own unique personality and getting to know everyone is really fun.” Coles appreciated how the choir feels like a family: “Everybody comes from different backgrounds, but we’re all able to bond, even on the first day.”

The acoustics of the State House further elevated the experience. “Every time we cut off at the same time, it felt magical,” said Coles. Colantuoni, despite initial nerves, agreed: “It was kind of scary being in the front row, but it was an amazing space to be in.”

Performing at the State House was a truly unforgettable experience for the MHS Choral Arts Society. The combination of historical exploration, camaraderie and musical excellence created a day to remember. Both the students and their audience were inspired by the power of music in such a prestigious setting.
