Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital celebrates ribbon-cutting, expanding access to behavioral healthcare across Greater Boston

Mayor Gary Christenson, City Council President Amanda Linehan and members of the Malden legislative delegation assisted in Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital’s official ribbon-cutting, marking the upcoming opening of the new state-of-the-art, 144-bed behavioral health hospital designed to transform access to high-quality, compassionate mental health care in the Greater Boston area. Located at 100 Hospital Rd. in Malden, the hospital will be operated by a joint venture between Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare that builds on a shared commitment to meeting the growing behavioral health needs of communities across Massachusetts. The hospital anticipates opening by the end of the first quarter of 2026 once final preparations are completed.

The new hospital will provide comprehensive inpatient and intensive outpatient programs for children, adolescents, adults and older adults, offering a continuum of care tailored to each individual’s needs. Its thoughtfully designed environment promotes healing, safety and dignity.  Multidisciplinary care teams of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, social workers and other specialists work will collaboratively to support recovery.

“This project has been the result of strong partnerships and shared commitment – proof that when we work together, Malden continues to grow healthier and stronger,” said Malden Mayor Gary Christenson.

“This exciting project is the culmination of years of community engagement, hard work between public and private partners, and a commitment to finding something that works for our neighborhood and the region,” said City Council President Linehan, who represents the Ward 3 neighborhood where the hospital resides. “We are proud this new facility will build on the legacy of the former Malden Hospital and continue to build community and foster public health.”

The hospital also serves as a teaching site for future behavioral health professionals, supporting clinical education and training in partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine. This vital academic component will help grow the pipeline of clinicians prepared to meet increasing regional behavioral health needs.

“As we open the doors to Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital, we reaffirm Tufts Medicine’s commitment to addressing the growing mental health needs in our community and expanding access to high-quality care,” said Tufts Medicine President and CEO Michael Dandorph. “This hospital represents years of planning and collaboration, and today we celebrate not just a new facility, but a renewed promise to serve patients and families across Greater Boston.”

“This facility stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when mission-driven partners unite to address a critical public health challenge,” said Acadia Healthcare CEO Debbie Osteen. “This state-of-the-art facility will provide compassionate, evidence-based behavioral health services for individuals of all ages, and we are proud to open its doors alongside Tufts Medicine to support healing and resilience throughout the community.”

Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital CEO Jameson Pinette added, “We are proud to open our doors and invite the community to see the healing environment we’ve created. This hospital will be a place of hope and recovery for individuals facing behavioral health challenges, offering tailored support with dignity and respect.”

The new hospital builds on a legacy of behavioral health services previously provided by MelroseWakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital, expanding capacity and bringing together the latest evidence-based treatments within a single, modern campus.
