Revere City Council Roundup

By The Advocate

Local Hero Honored

The City Council awarded a certificate of merit to Brooke DiNuccio in recognition of her heroic actions during a recent medical emergency involving her grandfather, where she was able to control severe bleeding following a post-surgical complication until emergency personnel arrived.

Councillor-at-Large Michelle Kelley did the honors.

“Brooke’s courage, composure and quick thinking made all the difference during an emergency,” said Kelley. “Tonight, we recognize her for stepping up when it mattered most. You reflect great credit on yourself, your family and the city of Revere.”

Special Permit for Taft Street

The council referred Zoraida Uran’s request for a special permit to expand a pre-existing, non-conforming single story, single-family dwelling to a three-story, two-family dwelling at 53 Taft Street to the zoning subcommittee.

Hall’s Corner Island

Councillor-at-Large Michelle Kelley  filed a motion to  request the DPW and Traffic Commission to evaluate the channel/traffic island located at Hall’s Corner due to repeated vehicles striking its curbing, and recommend appropriate safety improvements, including but not limited to reflective yellow curb paint, delineator posts, and/or warning signage.

“This island has taken a beating over the years,” said Kelley. “I’m hoping it can be looked at and something can be done to heighten its visibility for public safety.”

Ward 6 Councillor Chris Giannino said Kelley’s motion was a great idea, but he still proposed a substitute motion to remove the island entirely. He said there have been numerous accidents at the site, including one he saw on his way to the city council meeting. The council voted unanimously in favor of Giannino’s substitute motion.

Wonderland Sewer Improvements

The council set a public hearing for June 1 for a $12,200,000 loan order for Wonderland Area Sewer Improvements. Chief Financial Officer Richard Viscay said the work was part of the consent decree the city is under.

Celebrate Responsibly

The council supported a motion presented by Councillor-at-Large Michelle Kelley that the Parks & Recreation Department and the Revere Police Department implement proactive public safety and enforcement measures at Griswold Park during the July 4th holiday due to recurring resident complaints regarding illegal fireworks activity. Kelley said the Fourth has been a huge problem for the neighborhood and the motion is just a proactive move to protect residents around Griswold Park.

Posting Scooter Rules

The council referred a motion presented by Councillor-at-Large Michelle Kelley that the Traffic Commission, the Department of Public Works and the Revere Police Department review and identify appropriate locations throughout the City for the installation of signs prohibiting the operation of motorized and electric scooters upon sidewalks and pedestrian areas, particularly in high pedestrian traffic areas, school zones, business districts and senior pedestrian corridors. Further, that said departments provide recommendations regarding appropriate signage language, placement locations and any additional pedestrian safety measures deemed appropriate.

“I’ve gotten complaints from residents fearful of being injured,” Kelley told fellow councillors. “Our ordinance prohibits scooters on sidewalks but there is confusion.”

Although councillors agreed there is a problem, several mentioned the Safe Ride Act, Governor Maura Healey proposal to regulate e-bikes, scooters and mopeds. The act calls for measures involving speed, age of the rider, safety equipment, registration, enforcement. The act would restrict where these vehicles can operate.
