Jeff Abber Memorial Golf Tourney to benefit numerous charities — Sept. 8

The 7th Annual Jeff Abber Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled to take place on Monday, Sept. 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown. The tournament supports numerous charitable causes, including an annual scholarship given to a Malden High School senior who has a passion for law and/or social justice, the Pan-Mass Challenge (an annual bike-a-thon across the state that raises money for life saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber) and Caring For A Cure, which was founded by the oncology nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital to improve the journey of patients and families with cancer through research, resources and awareness. Registration for the tournament is now open.

A former longtime Malden resident, Jeff Abber was an Associate Justice of Middlesex Probate and Family Court when he passed away in April 2017. Despite a cancer diagnosis in 2015, Jeff continued to live life as he always had with compassion, strength, empathy and the most amazing positive outlook and sense of humor. While undergoing treatment, Jeff continued to work, travel, golf, cook gourmet meals, spend time with family and friends, enjoy Boston sports, tell comical stories, enjoy music and simply enjoy life. As he often said, he was not sick; he simply had cancer. He enjoyed coaching his three children — two daughters and one son — on their sports teams and served as a coach and mentor to many in the Malden Youth Sports program. Two of his children are Malden High School graduates; one is a graduate of Malden Catholic High School.

For over 20 years Jeff maintained a law practice in Malden, The Law Office of Jeffrey A. Abber, on Salem Street, focusing on probate and family law. The highlight of Jeff’s career was when he was appointed an Associate Justice of the Probate and Family Court for Middlesex County by then Governor Deval Patrick. As an Associate Justice, Jeff presided initially in the Essex Probate and Family Court in Salem and later in the Middlesex Probate and Family Court in Cambridge. He served as a Judicial Mentor to new judges and served on the Education Committee for the Probate and Family Court, where he developed and shaped judicial education programs for the entire bench. Jeff also advanced and taught many continuing legal education programs for the Massachusetts Bar Association. Jeff was a past member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Family and Probate Inns of Court, the Malden Redevelopment Authority Board of Directors and the Malden Lions Club.

The Honorable Jeffrey A. Abber Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, was created in 2018. Other charities it supports are Wounded Warriors, Pine Street Inn, Bread of Life, Alzheimer’s Association and the American Cancer Society. Persons interested in making a donation and/or registering to golf in the tournament should visit the Abber Foundation website at JeffAbberFoundation.org.
