LaFeber Lifts Lady Eagles Basketball Past Boston Collegiate, 45–31

By Emily Brennan

Senior Sylvie LaFeber poured in a game-high 19 points to lead the Mystic Valley girls’ basketball team to a 45–31 victory over visiting Boston Collegiate on Sunday evening at the Eastern Avenue Gymnasium in Malden. With the win, the Eagles improve to 5–9 overall.

The matchup marked a rematch of the teams’ January 13 meeting, a 38–22 loss for Mystic Valley. This time, the Eagles set the tone early, delivering one of their strongest first-quarter performances of the season. Stifling defense limited Boston Collegiate to just four points, while a balanced offensive effort saw all five starters score as Mystic Valley jumped out to a 15–4 lead.

Foul trouble in the second quarter allowed Boston Collegiate to find some rhythm, but the Eagles stayed composed on defense and held their opponent to 12 points. Despite missing a few opportunities offensively, Mystic Valley maintained control and carried a 23–16 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter was evenly contested, with both teams scoring 11 points and knocking down three three-pointers. LaFeber led the Eagles during the stretch, with support from Gigi Cottam and Ella Mangone, to keep the lead intact.

Mystic Valley closed the game with another dominant defensive showing in the fourth quarter, once again holding Boston Collegiate to just four points. Five different Eagles scored in the final frame, sealing the 45–31 victory.

The Eagles return to action with two home games: Tuesday, February 3, against Greater Lowell Tech and Friday, February 6, against Medford. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.
