Annual Veterans Day Ceremony at World War I Monument at Devir Park

Special to The Advocate

Mayor Gary Christenson and Director of Veterans Services Kevin Jarvis invite the public to celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 11, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the World War I Monument located at Devir Park at the corner of Malden Street and the Fellsway. The World War I Monument has the names of nearly 3,000 Malden men and women who served during World War I. The ceremony will include the unveiling of a full-sized bronze statue of a World War I soldier.

On November 11, 1918, after four years of conflict, the armistice was signed by the allied nations and Germany – ending World War I. The observance of Veterans Day originated in 1919. Veterans Day is a federal holiday that honors all American veterans, regardless of which war they served in. It’s a day to thank living veterans for their service and to acknowledge that all who served have sacrificed. There are approximately 300,000 veterans living in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
