It is said… in Malden

That many Malden residents were stunned when they learned that John Brewer’s Tavern, which is located at the Malden-Medford line at the end of Highland Avenue in Malden and the beginning of Middlesex Avenue in Medford, closed its doors for good this past summer after 15 years of operation.

That it is now officially a “double whammy” as the closing of another longtime, popular restaurant in the same neighborhood, over the line in Medford, has closed – Tiki Island, 269 Middlesex Ave., Medford – which served some of the best Polynesian-Chinese food in the region for over 40 years.

That Gary R. Christenson is a former Major League lefthanded pitcher for the Kansas City Royals in the 1979 and 1980 seasons, appearing in 30 big league games… but he is not THAT guy you’re thinking about.

That Malden Mayor Gary J. Christenson probably dreamed his own professional baseball dream as a youngster, but unlike the ex-KC hurler, THIS Mr. Christenson is seeking to hit the 25-year-plus mark of public service to Malden if reelected next Tuesday.

That there are still some people who will forget to turn their clocks back at 2:00 a.m. this Sunday, November 5, and will not realize they are an hour ahead of themselves – not a bad thing for people who are always late.

That more than a few people were talking about how nice of a guy former Red Sox pitcher (2004-2009) and present NESN Color Commentator Lenny DiNardo is, after he served as the guest speaker at last Thursday night’s annual Malden Babe Ruth League banquet and awards ceremony.

That Malden High assistant football coaches Joe Pappagallo and Pat Donoghue – both MHS alumni – are on the road in Phoenix, Arizona, this week, taking in the 2023 World Series, with tickets courtesy of Donoghue’s nephew, Mike Fitzgerald, who is Vice President, Research and Development for the D-Backs.

That Mike Fitzgerald, a lifelong Malden resident until 2012, is a 2007 Malden Catholic HS and 2011 MIT graduate who formerly worked for ESPN, then the Pittsburgh Pirates, before coming to MLB’s Arizona franchise in 2016.

That traffic around Malden – at every single intersection – seems to be getting heavier and more congested, every day, with no letup in sight.

That Malden resident Benjamin Davis is ninth on the Civil Service hiring list of the Massachusetts State Police, and David Senatillaka, a military veteran, is 199th.

That two other Malden residents – Duy Paul Nguyen (417) and Sean Tirrell (882) – appear in the first 1,000 candidates listed.
