Malden legislators announce $1.2M for transportation improvements in Malden

State Senator Jason Lewis and State Representatives Paul Donato, Steve Ultrino and Kate Lipper-Garabedian were pleased to announce that Malden is receiving $1.2 million in Chapter 90 funds from the state to fund local transportation infrastructure, as part of a $300 million allocation to support transportation-related improvements, including road and bridge repairs, that goes directly to municipalities across Massachusetts. This funding is part of a larger $1.2 billion bond bill that also authorizes:

  • $500 million for the bridge and pavement Lifecycle Asset Management Program, which supports communities with non-federally aided roads and bridges projects
  • $200 million for repair and replacement of local culverts and small bridges
  • $185 million for projects that reduce congestion hotspots, including intersection improvements, railroad crossings and sidewalks

“I’m very pleased that the state legislature is providing these critical funds to our local communities for transportation improvements,” said Senator Lewis. “I know that this money will be put to good use in Malden improving roads, sidewalks, and other infrastructure.”

“I am proud Malden is receiving funds for the improvement of transportation infrastructure,” said House Second Assistant Majority Leader Donato. “These funds will be a direct investment into the safety and accessibility for our community and will ensure our residents have the resources they need.”

“I want to thank House and Senate leadership, as well as my colleagues in the Malden delegation, for their hard work in securing these critical Chapter 90 funds,” said Representative Ultrino, who is Chairperson of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Management. “This investment will allow Malden to make important improvements to our roads, sidewalks, and other transportation infrastructure, enhancing safety, accessibility, and quality of life for all residents.”

“This bill will provide critical funding to the municipalities in the 32nd Middlesex for infrastructure upgrades and projects,” said Representative Lipper-Garabedian. “The Chapter 90 program along with the additional program investments will bolster transportation systems, modernize culverts, improve local roadway safety, support sustainability and climate-conscious efforts, and enhance daily life in our community.”

The $300 million Chapter 90 funds going directly to municipalities to support their local infrastructure is a 50% increase from the $200 million Chapter 90 bill passed by the Legislature last year. After passing in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, this legislation was signed into law by Governor Maura Healey on August 8, 2025.
