Mystic Valley Girls Swim Team finishes 5th at State North Sectional Meet

By Emily Brennan

Mystic Valley Girls Swim Team this past Friday competed at the MIAA North Sectional Championship meet and came away with a fifth-place overall swimming against both Division 1 and 2 girls’ teams.

The team had many outstanding swims on the day starting in the very first event where Seniors  Isabella Cirame, Britney Nayiga, Isabelle Pennachio and Lucia Antonucci swam to 2nd place finishing in 1:53.20.  The team just missed the team record by less than two tenths of a second, set by last year’s State Champion Medley Relay.  They hope to take it down in next week’s Division 2 State Championship Meet.

In the 200 Individual Medley, which consists of a swimmer swimming two lengths of the pool each stroke butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle Cirame, Antonucci and Pennachio came up big with a third, fifth and eighth place combining for 41 total points with no other team placing more than one member in the top ten.  In the 50 Free that followed Senior Captain Britney Nayiga placed fifth in 25.34 seconds beating her own team record set a year ago.

After the diving event, in which Mystic Valley has no dive team, Pennachio placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly securing valuable points, teammate senior Khloe Ko finished 19th.  That strong performance was followed by Cirame taking 5th in the 100 Yard Freestyle sprint event, in a season best 55.67 seconds. Also competing and finishing in 17th just outside scoring points was 8th grader Benitah Mwebaza.

The next event for the team was the 200-yard Freestyle Relay quartet of Antonucci, 8th grader Benitah Mwebaza, Cirame and Nayiga, who swam to another impressive 2nd place finish at 1:42.77

In the final individual event of the day Mystic Valley senior Captain Britney Nayiga took home the gold in winning the event in personal best 1:09.12.   Her teammate Antonucci, last year’s sectional champion, placed second right behind in 1:09.37.  The 37 points was enough to solidify the team’s 5th place finish.

In the final event of the day, the 400 Freestyle Relay, Mystic Valley’s team of freshman Phoebe Curtis, Pennachio, and sisters Belinda and Benitah Mwebaza placed 11th in 4:01. 79 bringing Mystic Valley’s total point tally to 200 points, just 16 points behind Marblehead and Wayland who tied for 3rd.
