Patriots softball team off to 1-2 start

Through its first few games this season, the Revere High School softball team has shown that it can score runs. The Patriots reached double digits in each of their opening two games before being shut out on Monday at Medford.

Revere is coming off a 4-14 campaign in 2022. The Patriots missed the postseason last year but head coach Megan O’Donnell and her squad are looking to improve on that this spring.

In its season opener last Wednesday at home against Greater Boston League foe Lynn English, Revere produced big offensively by tallying 20 runs. The one downfall is that English scored 32 times to prevail in a high-scoring 32-20 affair. O’Donnell called the English slugfest “a battle for the ages.” The Patriots smacked 20 hits as a team, led by Brianna Miranda and Emma Cassinello, who both homered. Pitcher Danni Randall made her first career start.

The Patriots were involved in another barnburner last Thursday at East Boston. This time they came out on top by a whopping 19-16 margin over the host Jets. Several Revere players contributed to the offensive attack. Junior Ally Straccia socked a home run while Lea Doucette, Cassinello, Miranda, Jordan Martelli, Randall, and freshman Frankie Reed all contributed base hits.

O’Donnell praised shortstop Riley Straccia for her strong defensive play. Miranda and Isabella Qualiteri combined to earn the win on the mound. On Monday, Reed managed Revere’s lone hit – a fifth-inning single – in a 15-0 defeat at the hands of the Medford Mustangs.

Despite being blanked against Medford, Revere was still averaging 13 runs a game through its first three contests. The 1-2 Patriots resumed action on Wednesday with a road tilt at Chelsea, followed by a Thursday home battle against Northeast Metro Tech. From there, Revere is off until next Wednesday morning, April 19, when it hosts neighboring rival Everett (scheduled 10 a.m. start).
