(Saugus, MA) March 13, 2025 – The Saugus Department of Public Works is alerting residents that they will soon receive mailings to schedule an appointment for a free water meter replacement as part of a project that will upgrade the town’s water metering technology to enhance customer service and provide customers with more ways to manage water use – all while improving operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
Beginning this month, Mass Installation, Inc., a vendor contracted by the town, will mail postcards to all residential and commercial water customers requesting that they book an appointment to have their water meters replaced. There is NO COST to residents or businesses for the replacement of the water meters and meter transmitting units.
The mailings from Mass Installation, Inc. will explain how customers can easily schedule an appointment by phone or through the company’s website.
Water meter installations will take place on Tuesdays through Saturdays during regular business hours over the next two years. The average installation time is less than an hour and customers can expect their water service will be interrupted for approximately 15 minutes during the installation.
Customers are asked to make sure access to their water meter is safe and clear, and that someone over the age of 18 is present for the water meter installation appointments. Workers with Mass Installation, Inc. will travel in marked company vehicles and be wearing proper identification at all times.
Pleae note: Participation in the Town of Saugus Water Meter Replacement and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Implementation Program is mandatory.
Benefits of Water Meter Replacement Project
Most of the water meters in town are 15 to 20 years old and at the end of their useful life. The Water Meter Replacement and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Program will result in the upgrade of about 9,700 water meters in the Town of Saugus.
The goal of the Water Meter Replacement and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Implementation Program is to implement a cellular-based meter reading system that improves the accuracy of water consumption for billing, reduces unaccounted-for water use, and provides significant customer service improvements.
After current water meters are replaced with the upgraded meters and transmitters, in the near future customers will have access to a customer portal and smartphone app called EyeOnWater.
This customer portal – which will be available at no cost to residents – will allow customers to conveniently monitor their water usage and to sign up to receive notifications for higher-than-normal water use that could signal a potential leak.
The EyeOnWater tool shows daily, weekly, monthly and yearly water usage activity through easy-to-understand graphs to help customers monitor and conserve water use. EyeOnWater delivers leak alerts and usage trends to customers through emails or text messages.
“This new technology is a great resource that can make a big difference in the way residents and businesses manage their water usage,” Town Manager Scott Crabtree said. “The notifications for high water use will help alert customers if something serious occurred such as a leak or burst pipe that could cause property damage and result in exorbitant water bills.”
The town has retained the engineering firm Weston and Sampson to ensure that the upgrade from the current water meters to the cellular-based water metering technology is completed efficiently and correctly.
The Saugus Department of Public Works will continue to provide safe, reliable water service throughout the implementation of the Water Meter Replacement and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Implementation Program.
The town will provide updates as the Water Meter Replacement and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Implementation Program progresses. Please contact the Department of Public Works at 781-231-4143 with any questions related to the project.
We’re looking forward to providing you with the best service possible.
