Tornado boys’ basketball takes down St. Paul’s of Connecticut

By Julian Cardillo

The Malden boys’ basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a sterling performance on December 23 in a 60-44 win against St. Paul’s of Bristol, Connecticut.

Malden played St. Paul’s as part of the Springfield Hall of Fame Tournament at New England College.

The tournament brought together 50 teams from around the country – many from the Northeast – for an annual high school basketball palooza.

“I had been trying to get into this tournament for years, I’ve known the organizers for a while,” said Malden coach Don Nally. “Back in early September, I got a text asking if I had space for games in December. I knew what it was and I was like ‘heck yeah.’”

Malden and St. Paul finished the first quarter tied at 13. The Golden Tornadoes took a 32-28 lead into halftime, and then improved to go up 47-30 in the third.

Tyler Holness had 18 points, while Mozell Johnikken helped his team extend their lead with three converted three-point shots.

Malden opens 2018 against Winthrop at home on January 3.
