Girls ages 5 to 14 explored careers in public safety

The City of Everett shared with over 100 girls ages five to 14 the power, importance and strength of women in public safety at the third annual G.I.R.L.S. Day. The event, which was in partnership with Alliance Security, the Everett Fire and Police Departments, the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Association of Massachusetts and Tufts University’s Department of Public Safety, demonstrated to participants that there are women just like them who serve in public safety and that these careers are options for them, too. Grit, Intelligence, Resilience, Leadership and Strength are the five themes that are prevalent throughout the event.

Each group, separated by age range, participated in learning labs to view demonstrations and participate in activities like collecting clues, using the fire hose, K-9 demonstrations, obstacle courses with the Massachusetts National Guard, learning about what police and firefighters do, and more. Led by female police officers and firefighters, the groups cycled between the Recreation Center, Everett Police Station and the Everett Fire Department’s Ferry Street Station, where participants would find various activities to learn about careers in public safety. During the day participants were provided with free lunch, such as pizza, sandwiches and water. Every girl was also given swag bags to take home, including various items from each partnering public safety department that collaborated on the event.

Later in the event, participants were treated to one of the Massachusetts State Police helicopters landing on the field at Glendale Park. The G.I.R.L.S. Day participants gathered in front of the pilots as they spoke about what they do and the different tools the helicopter has. The helicopter’s landing and departure were quite the show for everyone in attendance.
